Where did the term Generation Beta come from?
Futurist Mark McCrindle coined the term 'Beta' to define babies born between 2025 and 2039. He said that by 2035 they will make up 16 per cent of the global population. In his blog post, McCrindle explained that they would be the children of Generation Y (Millennials) and the older Generation Z, adding that many of the children of Generation Beta will live till the 22nd century.
The post further clarified that it has named the previous and new generation as Alpha and Beta, which not only reflects the new generations but also the first generations that will be shaped by a completely different world. So we started using the Greek alphabet to represent how these different generations will be raised in the new world of technological integration.
'An important chapter in the developing world'
McCrindle's site also noted that Gen Beta represents an important chapter in the developing world. Her work made clear that Gen Beta will have a seamless digital and physical world, and said it will live in an era where AI and automation are deeply embedded in everyday life, from education and the workplace to healthcare and entertainment."
McCrindle said Generation Beta will grow up in a world shaped by breakthroughs in technology, evolving social norms, and a growing focus on sustainability and global citizenship.
