Makar Sankranti 2025: Prepare sesame-jaggery laddus for Makar Sankranti, know the easy method
Making sesame-jaggery laddus on Makar Sankranti is considered auspicious. These are not only tasty but also beneficial for health. The tradition of consuming sesame-jaggery laddus is not limited to taste and health, but there is a deep religious, spiritual and scientific reason behind it. On Makar Sankranti, the Sun enters Capricorn which is called the beginning of Uttarayan. This time is considered favorable for auspicious works. It is believed that donating sesame is Mahadaan i.e. donating sesame is extremely virtuous. Therefore, sesame laddus are also donated on Makar Sankranti. It is a tradition in Maharashtra that while distributing tilgul on Makar Sankranti, people say, "Tilgul Ghya, God God Bola" i.e. take tilgul and speak sweetly. It means maintaining mutual love and harmony.
Consumption of sesame and jaggery is beneficial in winter. Sesame and jaggery keep the body warm, which gives energy to the body in cold weather. It strengthens the immune system and protects against cold. Sesame contains calcium, iron and healthy fats, which strengthen bones and muscles. Here is the method of making sesame and jaggery laddus.
Ingredients for sesame-jaggery laddus
One cup white sesame, 3/4 cup jaggery (grated), one tablespoon ghee, half teaspoon cardamom powder, 2-3 tablespoons water.
Method of making sesame-jaggery laddus
Step 1- Put sesame seeds in a pan and fry them on low flame till they turn golden. When the sesame seeds start to swell and start emitting fragrance, turn off the gas and take out the sesame seeds in a plate.
Step 2- Heat ghee in the same pan and add grated jaggery to it. Add two to three spoons of water and let the jaggery melt on low flame.
Step 3- Keep stirring the jaggery continuously till it thickens.
Step 4- Now add roasted sesame seeds and cardamom powder to the melted jaggery and mix well. Then turn off the gas and let the mixture cool slightly so that laddus can be made easily.
Step 5- Apply a little ghee on your hands and make small laddus from this mixture. After the laddus are made, let them cool and then store them in an airtight container.
While making sesame laddus, keep in mind that fry the sesame seeds on low flame so that the sesame seeds do not burn. Do not cook the jaggery syrup too much otherwise the laddus can become hard. If you want, you can also add chopped cashews, almonds or peanuts to it.
