Rajasthan: 22 carat seal on 17 carat gold, jewelers were cheating customers in Rajasthan for a long time, secret revealed in Bureau of Standards raid
Gold is purchased heavily in India. Gold is also considered a good investment option. But one needs to be very cautious while buying gold. Because many jewelers cheat customers by tampering with the quality of gold. One such case has come to light from Rajasthan. Where jewelers were cheating customers for a long time. The jewelers here were selling 17 carat gold to customers at a higher price by putting 22 carat level on it. This was revealed when the Bureau of Indian Standards team raided the shop.
According to the information received, this action of Bureau of Indian Standards took place in Nagaur district of Rajasthan. Where the Bureau of Indian Standards and Nagaur Kotwali Police team took joint action against two establishments that were putting fake hallmark.
The team from Jaipur searched for two hours
Actually, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has raided two jewelers' establishments in Nagaur city and exposed fake hallmarking of gold ornaments. The teams from Jaipur raided two establishments named Bharat Tanch and Deepak Tanch operating in Khatu Wala Market and Salasar Market in Bajarwada of Nagaur city at 2:30 pm on Thursday.
Jewellery prepared with fake hallmarking seized
There was a stir among the jewellers on getting the inkling of the action of the BIS team. After the action which lasted for about 2 hours, the team seized gold ornaments prepared with fake hall marking. Joint Director Deepak Lodwal, Raman Kumar Trivedi, Mohit Meena and Poonam Chaudhary of the Bureau of Indian Standards Jaipur team reached Nagaur with their team.
The investigating officers had already parked their vehicles before the shop. The BIS team, along with the Nagaur Kotwali police, left their vehicles near the dargah at Mahi Darwaza and reached these two establishments in Bazarwada on the bikes of local people in a team of two people each. The team did not give the businessmen who put fake hallmarks a chance to escape, and then called the entire team and the Kotwali police to the spot.
Hallmarking on all gold jewellery is mandatory from 2021.
It is worth mentioning that according to the Hall Marking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order 2020, a guideline issued by the Department for Consumer Affairs, BIS hallmark has been implemented on gold jewellery and artefacts from 16 June 2021.
BIS has started a marking system with a 6-digit hallmark unique ID for proof of BIS logo (seal and purity). Hallmarked jewellery can only be sold by jewellers registered with BIS. Under Section 29-2 of the BIS Act 2016, there is a provision of a fine of Rs 1 lakh and confiscation action for misuse of BIS including hallmark.
