The life of Varanasi's famous litterateur Shrinath Khandelwal became like a tragic story of a novel. Khandelwal, who wrote more than 400 books and owned property worth 80 crores, passed away on Saturday (28 December 2024). It is ironic that the life of that great litterateur who touched thousands of hearts with his writings, ended in an old age home due to the indifference of his own son and daughter, as he was counting his last breaths alone in an old age home.

Shrinath Khandelwal's life was once luxurious. Shrinath Khandelwal enriched Indian literature with his writings. He translated precious texts like Shiva Purana and Matsya Purana into Hindi. His 3000-page Matsya Purana is still popular among scholars. He not only worked on religious texts but also wrote many books on modern literature and history. His books are available in languages like Hindi, Sanskrit, Assamese and Bengali. In the last days of his life, he wanted to complete the translation of Narasimha Purana, but his last wish remained unfulfilled. Not only this, the son and daughter on whom he sacrificed his life, threw him out of the house.

According to reports, on March 17, 2024, his son and daughter threw him out of the house, after which he was living in the old age home of Kashi Kushtha Seva Sangh. A few months ago, a video of him went viral, in which he shared his painful story. He had said, "I spent my whole life for my children, but now they have become strangers to me. I had everything, but today I am alone." His dedication towards literature was unparalleled. He started writing at the age of just 15 and dedicated his life completely to literature. But look at the irony, the children of the person whose words gave direction to the society could not give him a place in their house. His son is a businessman and daughter is a lawyer in the Supreme Court, but they turned their back on their father. Shrinath Khandelwal, the owner of property worth 80 crores, was forced to live in an old age home. When his condition worsened on Saturday morning, the family was informed from the hospital. But the son did not come making the excuse of being 'out', and the daughter did not even pick up the phone.

Finally, social worker Aman Kabir and his companions Ramesh Srivastava, Alok and Shailendra Dubey took responsibility for him. Aman and his companions took his body to Manikarnika Ghat and performed the last rites with full rituals. Aman said, "I wish his children had seen that we carried on our shoulders the one who was like a mountain for them at one time." Aman Kabir had also got him admitted in an old age home, in such a situation doctors contacted him and he came forward along with his friends.

Shrinath Khandelwal's works still inspire us, but his life forces us to think why in the society parents are abandoned by their own children. Kashi has lost a great litterateur, but his painful story is enough to shake every heart. In such a situation, the question on everyone's lips in Kashi is - do such children have the right to abandon their parents for 'property'?
