Indian nurse Nimisha Priya has been sentenced to death by a Yemeni court in the case of murder of a Yemeni citizen. However, President Rashad al-Alimi has not yet approved her death sentence. The Yemen Embassy in New Delhi has given important information in this case and told that Houthi rebels are behind the death sentence to Nimisha Priya. The Yemen Embassy said that this case has been run in the area controlled by Houthi rebels and that is why Yemen's President and Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council Rashad al-Alimi has not approved this decision.

What is the Nimisha Priya case?

Nimisha Priya, a resident of Kollengode in Palakkad district of Kerala, was found guilty of murdering a Yemeni citizen in July 2017. Nimisha Priya is accused of killing a Yemeni citizen named Mehdi.

Nimisha was working in a private hospital in Yemen for a long time, after which she opened her own clinic in Yemen with the help of Mehdi. Nimisha Priya's husband and daughter had come to India due to financial reasons, but she was unable to return as Mehdi had Nimisha's passport. Nimisha Priya is accused of allegedly giving an injection of anesthesia to Mehdi to get her passport back from him. Due to which he died.

Nimisha is lodged in Sana's jail

Since then, the 37-year-old nurse has been lodged in Sana's jail. This area is under the control of Iran-backed Houthi rebels. In the year 2020, the trial court sentenced Nimisha Priya to death for being guilty in this murder. Which was upheld by the Supreme Judicial Council of Yemen. Nimisha Priya's mother has said in her petition that Mehdi tortured nurse Nimisha Priya for years and confiscated her passport so that she could not go out of Yemen.

India is keeping an eye on this matter. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has said, "The government is providing all possible help in this matter." The government and the concerned agencies are engaged in resolving this matter diplomatically.
