Champions Trophy: ICC Gives PCB Ultimatum to Accept Hybrid Model or Face Exclusion

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued a stern ultimatum to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) regarding the hosting of the Champions Trophy 2025. The ICC has made it clear that PCB must agree to the hybrid model or be prepared to have the tournament proceed without Pakistan's participation.

What is the Hybrid Model?

Under the hybrid model, some matches of the Champions Trophy would be held in Pakistan, while others, especially involving India, would be played in a neutral venue, likely the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This arrangement stems from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s refusal to send the Indian team to Pakistan due to security concerns.

Stalemate in ICC Meeting

The ICC Executive Board convened on Friday to finalize the schedule and venues for the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, due to PCB’s resistance to the hybrid model, the meeting ended without a resolution and was postponed.

An ICC insider reportedly stated:
"No broadcaster would invest in a tournament without India’s participation, and Pakistan is aware of this reality. The ICC will only proceed with further discussions on Saturday if PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi agrees to the hybrid model."

ICC’s Warning to PCB

If PCB continues to reject the hybrid model, the ICC may consider moving the entire tournament to another country, possibly the UAE, and proceed without Pakistan’s involvement. This would be a significant setback for Pakistan, as they were initially slated to host the event entirely.

Meeting Under New Leadership Soon

The ICC meeting on Friday was chaired by Vice President Imran Khwaja, as outgoing President Greg Barclay was absent. The discussions are expected to continue under the leadership of incoming ICC Chairman Jay Shah, who will take over in early December.

What’s Next?

The ICC and PCB are under pressure to reach a decision quickly, as the schedule and logistics for the Champions Trophy 2025 need to be finalized soon. Whether PCB will compromise or face exclusion remains to be seen.

The Champions Trophy 2025 is a crucial tournament, and a solution that satisfies all stakeholders is necessary for its success.
