Diwali 2026 Cleaning Vastu Tips: Dhanteras will be celebrated on Friday, November 6, and Diwali on Sunday, November 8. With these festivals approaching, the task of cleaning homes has already begun. In Indian households, the to-do list for Diwali cleaning is extensive—from washing curtains and wiping down ceiling fans to scrubbing every corner of the house. However, Vastu Shastra suggests beginning the cleaning process from three specific areas of the home. These are not necessarily the kitchen, the balcony, or the spots that appear the dirtiest; rather, they are areas considered highly significant in Vastu, and it is essential to clean them before Diwali. Let us explore, through the lens of Vastu, which three areas should be prioritized during your Diwali cleaning.

Start with this direction first.
According to Vastu Shastra, you should begin your Diwali cleaning from the North-East direction. In Vastu, this direction is also known as the 'Ishaan Kona' or 'Ishaan Disha'. Vastu divides a home into various directions, each associated with a specific deity and a particular element. Among these, the North-East is considered the most sacred. It is governed by the deity 'Ishaan'—a form of Lord Shiva—and its associated element is water.
The gateway for positive energy
The North-East direction is regarded as the gateway for positive energy. Morning sunlight first reaches the home from the East, while stable, cool energy arrives from the North. Vastu considers the point where these two energies converge to be the purest zone of the house. This is why, according to Vastu, the prayer room (puja room), meditation space, and water storage areas should ideally be located in this direction.
Do not leave this direction in a state of neglect.
When the North-East direction is cluttered, dark, or unclean, Vastu suggests that the flow of positive energy throughout the entire house is diminished. If this area is cluttered, family members may experience restlessness, decision-making may be delayed, and peace of mind can be affected. Conversely, keeping the northeast corner clear ensures good health for family members and helps remove obstacles. As you prepare to welcome Goddess Lakshmi into your home for Diwali, this corner plays a crucial role in setting the right atmosphere.
Remove these items before Diwali.
Ensure that this space is completely cleared before the Diwali festivities begin. There should be no heavy, broken, or unused items here. Old newspapers, cardboard boxes, shoe racks, and trash bins should never be kept in this area. If there is a heavy cupboard in this corner, move it to the southwest—the ideal location for heavy objects.
Pay attention to the main entrance.
According to Vastu, the main entrance of a home serves as the gateway for both positive and negative energy. Once the northeast corner has been cleared, the main entrance should also be thoroughly cleaned. Just as the heart is vital to the human body, the main entrance plays a pivotal role in a home. Cleaning this area before Diwali invites positive energy, paving the way for the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi during the festive prayers (puja).
A space associated with Kuber
In Vastu, the northern direction of a home is considered highly significant. It is governed by Kuber, the deity of wealth. It is believed that the north is linked to financial prosperity, economic growth, and abundance. Therefore, it is essential to thoroughly clean the northern part of your home before Diwali. Remove any old belongings, broken utensils, junk, or useless items. Additionally, ensure that this area remains well-lit and tidy.
The Blessings of Goddess Lakshmi
According to Vastu principles, keeping the northern direction clean before Diwali facilitates the flow of positive energy within the home and ensures the continued blessings of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera. It is considered auspicious to keep safes, cash boxes, or important documents clean and well-organized in this direction.
