Do you also consider Sawan Shivratri and Mahashivratri to be the same? Find out the difference between these two festivals right now..

In Sanatan Dharma, a monthly Shivratri is observed every month. On this day, there is a tradition of worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, along with observing a fast according to prescribed rituals. According to religious belief, observing this fast brings all worldly happiness to the devotee and secures the grace of Mahadev.

Although Shivratri is celebrated every month, Mahashivratri and Sawan Shivratri are considered particularly significant. Each holds its own unique importance. Since many people often confuse the two, this article explains the differences between Sawan Shivratri and Mahashivratri.

**Difference between Sawan Shivratri and Mahashivratri**

**Sawan Shivratri:** This festival is celebrated on the *Chaturdashi* (14th day) of the *Krishna Paksha* (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Sawan. Worshipping Goddess Parvati alongside Mahadev on this occasion is considered auspicious. It is also the day when the holy water collected during the *Kanwar Yatra* is offered to the deity.

**Mahashivratri:** According to the Vedic calendar, the festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated with great enthusiasm every year on the *Chaturdashi* of the *Krishna Paksha* in the month of Phalgun. There is a tradition of worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on this day. Doing so brings auspicious results to the devotee and ensures peace and happiness in their married life.

**Significance of Sawan Shivratri and Mahashivratri**

**Sawan Shivratri:** According to mythology, the *Samudra Manthan* (Churning of the Ocean) took place during the month of Sawan in the quest for *Amrit* (nectar of immortality). Poison emerged from this churning, and Lord Shiva consumed it to save the universe, causing his throat to turn blue. To soothe the burning sensation caused by the poison, the gods performed *Jalabhishek* (ritual bathing with water) on Mahadev. This is why Sawan Shivratri is celebrated; performing *Jalabhishek* of Mahadev is a key ritual on this occasion.

**Mahashivratri:** According to mythology, the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati took place on the *Chaturdashi* of the *Krishna Paksha* in the month of Phalgun. Goddess Parvati had performed severe penance to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. This is the reason the festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated. Worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati holds great significance on this auspicious occasion.

When does Sawan begin?
