You may have noticed that while all other deities are worshipped in home temples, there is no idol or picture of Lord Shani (Saturn). It is said that there is a curse behind this. Let's find out why idols or pictures of Lord Shani are not kept in homes. According to mythological and astrological beliefs, keeping an idol of Lord Shani at home can bring misfortune, discord, financial loss, and increased mental stress in the family.

In Hindu tradition, establishing a prayer room at home and performing daily worship is considered very auspicious. It is believed that keeping idols or pictures of deities like Vishnu, Shiva, Lakshmi, and Ganesha in the home temple brings mental peace. However, there is a special rule regarding Lord Shani in this tradition. The scriptures and Puranas state that one should not keep an idol, picture, or yantra (mystical diagram) of Lord Shani, as it is considered inauspicious. It is said that there is a curse associated with having an idol, picture, or yantra of Lord Shani in the house. Although you can perform Aarti (ritual of waving lamps) and chant mantras of Lord Shani at home, keeping his idol is strictly prohibited. Let's understand the reasons behind this...
According to mythological stories, Lord Shani was a great devotee of Lord Krishna. Once, his wife came to him while he was engrossed in meditation and devotion. It is said that when Lord Shani ignored her despite all her efforts, she became angry and cursed him severely. According to the legend, she cursed him that whoever looked at him would face difficulties in life. It is said that since then, seeing Lord Shani is considered a source of fear, and to prevent his gaze from falling directly upon us, it is not considered appropriate to keep his picture or idol at home.
It is believed that because of this curse, wherever Lord Shani's gaze falls, misfortunes begin to befall that person or place. If an idol or picture of Lord Shani is kept at home, his gaze may fall on the family members. Astrological and religious beliefs suggest that this can lead to unexpected problems, illnesses, and bad omens. If Saturn's direct gaze falls upon a house, it can lead to situations such as wasteful spending, increased debt, and business losses. For this reason, it is feared that Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth) will not reside permanently in that house. Therefore, those who desire wealth and peace avoid keeping an idol of Saturn in their homes.
However, some people keep a Saturn Yantra (a sacred geometric diagram) in their homes. Keeping a Saturn Yantra is believed to reduce the inauspicious effects of Saturn's Sade Sati and Dhaiya periods and provide relief from troubles. However, it should only be placed in the home after proper consecration and rituals performed by astrologers and priests. The Saturn Yantra is always placed on a Saturday, facing either the north or west direction.
According to Vastu Shastra, idols kept in the home should reflect peace and positive energy. Since Lord Saturn is considered to have a fearsome form and immense power, it is believed that the home environment cannot balance that energy, and this is thought to increase Vastu defects. Therefore, while it is considered auspicious to visit Lord Saturn in temples, it is better not to keep his idol at home.
