Bedwetting is a common problem in children aged 2 to 4 years. Some children outgrow it with time, but in some cases, the problem persists even after the age of 5-7 years. Both Ayurveda and modern science consider this problem to be related to both the body and the mind. In Ayurveda, this condition is called Shayyamutra (bedwetting). It is not considered merely a habit, but a condition connected to both the body and the mind. Let's learn about the causes behind this problem and how it can be reduced.

Why do children wet the bed while sleeping?
– Ayurveda states that bedwetting in children is due to an imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas, which weakens the nerves and makes them unable to withstand any pressure. An increase in Vata and Kapha doshas leads to deep sleep, due to which the brain fails to send signals, and the child wets the bed. Sometimes, weak digestion also causes an imbalance in the Vata dhatu, weakening bladder control.
– From a scientific perspective, it is linked to bladder weakness, an underdeveloped bladder, an inability to receive signals during deep sleep, increased urine production at night, constipation, UTIs, and hormonal imbalances.
Easy ways to prevent the problem
– Ayurveda suggests some ways to reduce this problem. The first is to mix carom seeds, black sesame seeds, and jaggery, and give it to the child with milk. This strengthens the nerves.
– The second is a mixture of amla (Indian gooseberry) and honey, which is also beneficial. Give the child this mixture twice a day.

– It is important to remember not to scold the child or embarrass them in front of others. This problem is not just mental but also physical. Encourage children to go to the washroom before going to bed at night. Also, lovingly explain to children to understand their body's signals. Sometimes children ignore the signals because they are playing or sleeping, which is not ideal.
