In Hinduism, time is calculated by the Panchang. Festivals keep coming throughout the year. There are also some special festivals which, if celebrated with rituals, yield Akshaya fruit. In Hinduism, 14 rivers are considered sacred, in which Ganga is given the status of mother. The Tritiya Tithi of Vaishakh Shukla Paksha, the second month of the Hindu calendar, is very special. Ganga Jayanti arrives on this day for human welfare. Celebrating the festival of Ganga Jayanti with rituals and doing some special measures on this day leads to prosperity, material happiness, and salvation. Pandit Shridhar Shastri, a learned astrologer from Haridwar, says that the month of Vaishakh is very special for religious activities.

Salvation of 60 thousand sons

According to Pandit Shridhar Shastri, the festival of Ganga Jayanti in this month is celebrated to get rid of all sorrows and to attain happiness, prosperity, and material pleasures. Many stories are described about the festival of Ganga Jayanti in religious texts. Mother Ganga came to earth from heaven on this day for human welfare. According to mythology, Ganga descended on earth on the day of Vaishakh Shukla Paksha to redeem the 60,000 sons of King Sagar who were burnt to ashes by the curse of Kapil Muni. King Bhagirath performed rigorous penance for the peace of his ancestors, after which Maa Ganga arrived on earth. Maa Ganga reached Rishikesh at a very fast speed through the mountains, where Sage Jahnu was doing penance. When Sage Jahnu's penance was interrupted and his ashram was destroyed, he drank the entire Ganga. At the request of the gods and goddesses and King Bhagirath, Sage Jahnu released Maa Ganga from his ear.

In the year 2025, the festival of Ganga Jayanti will be on Saturday, May 3. On this day, lighting 101, 201, 501, 1001, 2100, 3100, 5001 lamps, etc. on the banks of the Ganga brings happiness and peace to the house, and all problems in life end. On this day, bathing in the Ganga and donating during Brahma Muhurta also holds significance. On this day, all problems end if ghee lamps are lit in the evening at Haridwar, Har Ki Pauri, Brahmakund Ghat or on the banks of the Ganga. There is a religious belief that the seeker gets happiness, prosperity and material pleasures on this day. Lighting 365 lamps on the banks of the Ganga on Ganga Jayanti does not bring any sorrow or problem throughout the year.
