Health: Poor posture is causing lifelong joint pain; find out how prolonged sitting affects the body..

Just think about how nature shaped the human body after thousands of years of evolution: designed for walking miles, climbing heights, and engaging in various forms of physical labor throughout the day. Yet, what does the routine of today's 'modern' human look like? Remaining glued to a chair from morning till evening with eyes fixed on a laptop or mobile screen.

Dr. Ashish Agarwal, Director of the Physiotherapy Department at CK Birla Hospitals in Jaipur, has revealed a startling truth about this lifestyle. He notes that while technology has certainly accelerated the pace of our work, our current work environment is completely at odds with our body's natural anatomy, as well as the health of our joints and spine.

**A Heavy Load of 35 kg on the Neck**
The most significant and dangerous impact of constantly staring at screens is on our posture. Did you know that an adult's head weighs approximately 5 to 6 kilograms? However, when we tilt our necks forward by 60 degrees to look at a mobile phone or laptop, this weight increases five- to six-fold. This means your neck has to bear a load of roughly 30 to 35 kilograms at that moment.

This is precisely why most people suffer from back or neck pain at some point in their lives. Poor posture leads to chronic neck pain, shoulder stiffness, stress, and headaches.

**Dangerous Pressure on the Spine**
Sitting in a chair for hours causes the most damage to our spine. Prolonged sitting places immense pressure on the discs in the lower back. The natural flexibility of the spine—maintained by standing or moving around—begins to diminish due to continuous sitting. As a result, most office employees complain of lower back pain, joint stiffness, and mental stress. These issues can worsen with age.

**Joints and muscles are also paying a heavy price**
It is not just the spine; our body's joints are also bearing the brunt of this sedentary lifestyle. Sitting in the same position for extended periods restricts joint movement and slows down blood circulation in the surrounding tissues.

This directly affects our hips, knees, wrists, and shoulders. Among those who sit all day, it has become common to experience weakened hip muscles and the onset of knee arthritis or spondylosis at an early age. Furthermore, continuous typing or mouse usage strains the wrists and elbows, leading to an increasing prevalence of conditions like 'tennis elbow' and 'carpal tunnel syndrome.'

**So, what is the solution?**
The best way to avoid these problems is to adopt proper 'ergonomic' design principles at the workplace.

*   **Proper Setup:** Using adjustable chairs, monitor stands, and standing desks, as well as positioning the keyboard correctly, significantly reduces the strain on the spine and joints.
*   **Take Breaks:** It is crucial to take short breaks while working—walking around, standing up, and doing light stretching exercises right at your desk.
*   **Pay Attention to Posture:** Always remain mindful of how you sit.
