Holashtak 2025: Why are the 8 days of Holashtak before Holi not considered auspicious?

According to the Hindu religion, Holashtak is considered to be the beginning of the Holi festival, Holashtak is not only the time for preparations for Holi, but it is also considered very important from a religious and cultural point of view. This year Holashtak is starting from Friday, March 7, 2025, and it will end with Holika Dahan on Thursday, March 13, 2025. It is believed that no auspicious work is done in the 8 days of Holashtak. Even though auspicious work is not done in the eight days of Holashtak, during this time, the festival is celebrated with great pomp with flowers, colors, abir, etc. at the holy abode of Lord Krishna and Radha Rani i.e. Braj Mandal.

It is forbidden to do any auspicious work on this date from Ashtami of Falgun Shukla Paksha to Holika Dahan. However, these 8 days are considered very auspicious for the worship of God and chanting.

Why these 8 days are not considered auspicious

According to the religious belief related to Hinduism, on the eighth day of Falgun Shukla Paksha, Kaamdev disturbed the penance of Lord Shiva. Due to this, he became angry and he burnt Kaamdev. After this, when Kaamdev's wife prayed to Lord Shiva, he gave life back to Kaamdev.

It is also believed that King Hiranyakashyap tortured his son Prahlad hard in these eight days to make him worship Lord Vishnu. On the eighth day, when Holika sat with him in the fire, he did not burn. At the same time, Holika, who was blessed with the boon of not getting burnt by fire, got burnt. This is the reason why these eight difficult days of Lord's devotee Prahlad are considered inauspicious.

Do not do these things even by mistake.

Considering the eight days of Holashtak as extremely inauspicious, auspicious works like Mundan, engagement are not done at all in this. Similarly, neither any business is started nor any career is started in these eight days. Buying a new vehicle etc. in the eight days of Holashtak is also considered inauspicious.
