Ladies Special: What goes into menstrual products is even more important than what you apply to your face..

Menstrual care for women is no longer just about preventing leakage or ensuring protection; according to gynecologists, the composition of the menstrual hygiene products used is equally—if not more—important. Doctors point out that these products remain in contact with a woman's skin for extended periods.

Medical experts note a rapidly growing demand for sanitary pads that are dermatologically tested, made from breathable materials, and free from artificial fragrances. Additionally, new products infused with botanical ingredients are attracting women's attention. There are significant reasons for this trend, and these products offer distinct benefits.

Dr. Alpana Kansal, President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Ghaziabad, states that women spend approximately one-quarter of their reproductive lives menstruating. Therefore, it is essential to choose sanitary pads that not only offer excellent absorbency but are also safe and comfortable for the skin. Pads made from breathable materials and containing skin-friendly ingredients—such as Moringa—can provide greater comfort during prolonged use. However, changing pads regularly and maintaining good menstrual hygiene remains paramount. In recent years, the use of *Moringa oleifera* (drumstick) extract in sanitary pads has emerged as a new trend. Long used in Ayurveda, Moringa is rich in various vitamins, antioxidants, and other beneficial plant compounds.

According to a review published in *Frontiers in Pharmacology* in 2024, Moringa contains carotenoids, tocopherols, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and various vitamins. The study highlights its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.

While Moringa was previously used primarily as a dietary supplement, some manufacturers are now incorporating it into the top sheet of sanitary pads to offer superior absorbency alongside better skin care.

**No Substitute for Hygiene**
Doctors state that no specific ingredient or natural element can replace good menstrual hygiene. "Products containing plant-based ingredients may offer extra comfort to the skin, but changing pads on time, maintaining personal hygiene, and consulting a doctor in case of persistent irritation or unusual symptoms remain the most crucial aspects of menstrual health."

**Rising Demand for Breathable and Unscented Pads**
According to experts, women today prefer breathable sanitary pads that minimize the sensation of heat and moisture, especially during hot weather or physical activity.

Additionally, fragrance-free sanitary pads are gaining popularity, as scented products can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in many women.

Meanwhile, Dr. Richa Singhal, a senior obstetrician and gynecologist at Cloudnine Hospital, Delhi, said:
"Women today are becoming increasingly conscious of the ingredients used in personal care products." Instead of focusing solely on pad size or absorbency, one should also read the label. Pads that are dermatologically tested, made from high-quality materials, contain ingredients like Moringa, feature a breathable design, and are free from unnecessary fragrances can reduce the risk of discomfort for women with sensitive skin.
They also advised against using harsh soaps to cleanse the intimate area. If necessary, one should use only those products specifically formulated to maintain the natural pH balance of the external intimate area.

A Step Towards Transparency and Awareness
Health experts believe that the growing demand for transparency regarding the ingredients used in menstrual care products reflects a shift in women's perspectives. Consumers now place equal importance on skin safety, comfort, and health, alongside product performance.

Experts predict that the future will see further innovation in menstrual products featuring plant-based and skin-friendly ingredients. However, they emphasize that selecting products based on accurate information and maintaining good menstrual hygiene remain the most crucial foundations for a healthy menstrual experience.
