Magh Mela 2026: What is the significance of 'Shayya Daan' (bed donation) during Kalpavas? Learn why this tradition is important..

When a surge of faith overflows onto the sands of the confluence, it is called the 'Magh Mela'. The rules and traditions for devotees performing Kalpavas (a period of spiritual retreat) here are very strict. But within these traditions lies the path to liberation (Moksha). One of these important traditions is Shaiyaa Daan (the donation of a bed).

What are Kalpavas and Shaiyaa Daan?
Kalpavas means living a life of restraint and purity on the banks of the confluence for a fixed period. According to religious scriptures and scholars, Kalpavas is considered complete only when the devotee performs acts of charity and donation according to their faith and means. Among these, 'Shaiyaa Daan' (the donation of a bed and related items) is considered the most auspicious.

It is believed that during Kalpavas, a devotee sleeps on the ground and performs rigorous penance. When their Kalpavas ends, they donate a bed, mattress, sheets, pillows, and even a cot for the comfort and well-being of others.

Religious Significance of Shaiyaa Daan
Stories in the Puranas indicate that performing Shaiyaa Daan not only absolves one of the sins of this life but also brings peace to the ancestors. It is believed that a person who performs Shaiyaa Daan according to the prescribed rituals after Kalpavas does not have to suffer the torments of Yamaloka (the realm of Yama, the god of death) after death and finds a place in heaven.

This donation is not merely the donation of an object, but a symbol of the spirit of sacrificing one's own comforts to serve others. According to astrological and spiritual beliefs, Shaiyaa Daan pacifies several planetary defects in one's horoscope and brings happiness and prosperity to the home.

What to keep in mind during the donation?
Shaiyaa Daan involves donating not just a bed, but a complete bed set. This usually includes:

A new mattress and sheets

Pillows and a blanket or quilt

If possible, a mosquito net and an umbrella. This donation should be given to a deserving Brahmin or a needy person with complete devotion, along with a suitable offering.
