Today, women are highly conscious of skincare. Cleansing in the morning, moisturizing during the day, and aiding skin repair at night have become integral parts of their daily routine. However, the pursuit of skincare often leads to the overuse of products. Experts term this ‘over-skincare,’ which can be detrimental to the skin.

**What is this syndrome?**
In ‘over-skincare syndrome,’ women become excessively concerned about their skin and start using trendy products without understanding their specific skin type. Frequent scrubbing and exfoliation weaken the skin's natural protective layer, resulting in irritation, redness, itching, rashes, or sudden breakouts.
**The role of social media**
Videos promising ‘overnight’ results and an ‘instant glow’ on social media often tempt you to try out new serums and creams. In the rush to achieve a similar glow, you may end up damaging your skin barrier.
**Adopting incorrect techniques**
While potent ingredients like tretinoin, Vitamin C, and glycolic acid are beneficial, using them simultaneously and excessively can harm the skin. Similarly, washing the face too often, scrubbing vigorously, or overusing chemical peels and masks strips the skin of its natural oils. Consequently, the skin's outer layer weakens, making it appear dry, dull, and sensitive.
**Not understanding your skin type**
Every skin type has unique needs; hence, specific products are formulated for sensitive, oily, or dry skin. Using the wrong products without proper knowledge can aggravate irritation, pimples, or dryness. Identifying your skin type is essential for achieving the best results. When products are selected according to your skin's specific needs, the skin looks healthy and balanced.
**The need for a basic routine**
Just as excessive clutter creates chaos in a home, using too many products on the skin can prove harmful. So, opt for natural products, even if only a few.

Using the 'Sandwich Method'
Dr. Sampurna Das, a Junior Resident in the Department of Dermatology at Lady Hardinge Medical College, Delhi, advises simplifying your skincare routine if you feel you are heading towards 'over-skincare syndrome.' In such cases, the 'sandwich method' (moisturizer–retinoid–moisturizer) proves highly beneficial. This technique minimizes skin irritation while maintaining the effectiveness of the retinoid, as the moisturizer creates a protective barrier on the skin. Additionally, always perform a patch test before trying any new product. Balanced care is the true key to healthy, calm, and glowing skin.
