Parenting: Is your child also starting to hide things? Understand what problem this could be a sign of..

Do you remember the days when your child would start chattering the moment they got home from school? Their little stories, complaints about friends, and tales about their teachers seemed endless. But suddenly, there's an eerie silence in the house. If your child is now avoiding eye contact or being evasive, don't just dismiss it as "growing pains."

The biggest reason is fear.
Children often hide things because they're afraid of your reaction. They think that if they tell the truth, you'll get angry, scold them, or take away their phone. When children don't trust that you'll understand them, they start resorting to lies or silence.

Trouble at school or with friends?
If your child has suddenly become withdrawn, they might be a victim of bullying at school. Often, children are too embarrassed to tell their parents that someone is bothering them. They suffer in silence, and this starts affecting their behavior and studies.

The dangers of the digital world
These days, children have mobile phones, and it's difficult to always know what's happening online. Your child might have gotten into trouble online, be talking to a stranger, or have made a mistake they're afraid to confess. If they hide their phone or close the screen as soon as you enter the room, it's a red flag.

What should parents do?
Instead of becoming a detective, be a friend. Searching your child's room or yelling at them will only create more distance. First and foremost, make them feel that no matter what happens, you are there for them.

Tell them, "Son/Daughter, even if you've made a mistake, we'll fix it together. I won't be angry with you, just tell me the truth."

Make time to talk to your child, but not in an interrogative manner. When a child feels that their home is the safest place for them, they will open their heart on their own. Remember, hiding even a small thing can be a sign of a bigger problem in the future, so take the initiative today.
