Getting stains on bedsheets during periods is a common problem, but with the right information and techniques, these stubborn stains can be easily removed. Often, people panic and use the wrong methods, which only makes the stains more permanent. If the correct steps are followed promptly, the bedsheet can be restored to its original clean and fresh condition. The best part is that you don't need expensive chemicals; you can use items readily available at home.

The most important thing to understand is that period stains are bloodstains, and using hot water to remove bloodstains is the biggest mistake. Hot water sets the stain permanently into the fabric. Therefore, as soon as a stain occurs, the bedsheet should be soaked in cold water. If the stain is fresh, gently rubbing it with cold water may be enough to remove it. The sooner you act, the easier it will be to remove the stain.
If the stain has dried, salt and cold water are an effective solution. Add 1-2 tablespoons of salt to a bucket of cold water and soak the bedsheet for a few hours. Salt helps to loosen the blood, causing the stain to gradually fade. After soaking, washing with a mild detergent will remove most of the stain. This method is particularly effective for white or light-colored bedsheets.
Hydrogen peroxide is also helpful in removing old period stains, but it should only be used on white or colorfast fabrics. Apply a few drops to the stained area; it will start to foam, and the blood will begin to break down. After a few minutes, rinse with cold water. If the bedsheet is colored, be sure to test it on a small, inconspicuous area first to avoid damaging the color.
A mixture of baking soda and lemon juice is another natural and effective method. Sprinkle baking soda on the stain and then add lemon juice. After some time, gently rub and rinse with cold water. This method not only removes stains but also eliminates odors from the bedsheet. However, be careful not to leave it in direct sunlight for too long, as this may cause the color to fade.

If home remedies don't work, you can use an enzyme-based detergent. These detergents help break down protein-based stains like blood. Soak the bedsheet in cold water first, then apply the detergent and wash it as usual. Be sure not to dry the bedsheet in a dryer or in direct sunlight until the stain is completely removed.
