Shakib joined politics in 2023

In 2023, Shakib entered politics by joining the Awami League and won the Magura-1 constituency in the unopposed elections of January 7, 2024 on the party ticket. However, his political ambitions reportedly marked the beginning of his fall from grace in the eyes of the public.

Shakib's plans to end his Test cricket career at home with the match against South Africa were disrupted as he was charged in a murder case during the political unrest in Bangladesh. He refused to return to the country citing security concerns and the possibility of questioning by law enforcement agencies. Shakib is unlikely to return to Bangladesh soon as his family is currently residing in the US.
