Indian captain Shubman Gill scored a double century in the first innings of the second Test match against England. This is the first double century of Gill's Test career. Gill is the first Indian captain to score a double century in England. He managed to do so in 311 balls. Based on Gill's strong innings, India scored a big score against England.

Great partnership with Jadeja
India started the second day at 310 for five, but Gill and Ravindra Jadeja added 203 runs for the sixth wicket to take India to a strong score. Jadeja could not complete the century and was dismissed after scoring 89 runs, but Gill stayed and completed his double century. This 200+ run partnership between Jadeja and Gill is the third biggest partnership for the sixth or below wicket between an Indian pair against England. Earlier, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja had a partnership of 222 runs on the same ground (Edgbaston) in 2022.
11th captain to score a double century in England
Gill is the second youngest captain of India to score a double century in Tests. He has left behind Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli in this matter. Gill has done this feat at the age of 25 years 298 days. The record of the youngest captain to score a double century in Tests for India is in the name of M Pataudi, who achieved this feat against England in a match played in Delhi in 1964. Pataudi scored a double century in Tests as captain at the age of 23 years 39 days.
Sachin scored a double century in Tests against New Zealand in 1999 as captain, at that time he was 26 years 189 days old. At the same time, Kohli scored a double century in Tests as captain against West Indies in 2016 at the age of 27 years 260 days. Overall, 11 captains have scored double centuries in England, out of which four have been from the host team, while seven have been scored by players of the visiting team. Only Graeme Smith is ahead of Gill in terms of scoring a double century at the youngest age as a captain in England. Smith did this in 2003 at the age of 22 years and 175 days.
Left Gavaskar behind
Gill has achieved another feat based on his brilliant innings. Gill has become the batsman who has scored the most runs in an innings in England. He has left behind legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar in this matter. Gavaskar scored 221 runs in the match played at The Oval in 1979. Gill was successful in leaving him behind as soon as he scored 222 runs. In 2002, Rahul Dravid scored 219 runs at The Oval itself.

Indian Test captains who scored double centuries
Gill has joined the list of Indian Test captains who have scored double centuries. Kohli has scored a double century in Tests seven times as captain, while Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Gavaskar, Sachin, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and Gill have scored a double century once each as captain. Gill is the second Indian captain after Kohli to score a double century in Tests abroad. At the same time, Gill is the first Asian captain to score a double century in three countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). Before him, the record of scoring the most runs in these countries was in the name of former Sri Lankan batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan, who scored 193 runs at Lord's in 2011.
