While every full moon day (*Purnima*) holds significance in the Hindu calendar, the full moon of the *Bhadrapad* (or *Bhado*) month is considered particularly special. This day marks the beginning of *Pitru Paksha* (or *Shraddh*), a period dedicated to honoring one's ancestors. It has long been believed that bathing in a holy river and making donations on this day can naturally alleviate many of life's hardships.

However, people often wonder what exactly should be donated on this day to bring peace to the ancestors and ensure prosperity for the family. In this article, we will explore what to donate and understand the significance of these offerings.
1. Donation of Food Grains (The Greatest Act of Merit)
Our elders have always maintained that there is no greater act of righteousness (*Dharma*) than feeding the hungry. Donating items like rice, wheat, lentils, salt, and flour on *Bhadrapad Purnima* is considered highly auspicious. You may also donate *Sidha* (raw food rations) to a Brahmin or a needy person. It is believed that this practice ensures the household kitchen never runs short of food.
2. Donation of Clothes and Footwear
Donating clothes to the poor or needy on this day yields great spiritual merit. Ideally, the clothes should be new rather than worn or tattered. Additionally, donating shoes or slippers helps mitigate the malefic effects of the planets Rahu, Ketu, and Shani (Saturn), while also pleasing the ancestors and inviting their blessings.
3. Black Sesame Seeds and Pure Ghee
Since this full moon day heralds the arrival of the ancestors, donating black sesame seeds is considered extremely effective. To seek relief from *Pitru Dosh* (ancestral affliction) and resolve life's complications, one should donate black sesame seeds, pure cow's ghee, and jaggery.

4. Umbrellas and Essential Utensils
Ancient scriptures state that donating an umbrella helps dispel the clouds of crisis looming over one's life. Furthermore, depending on your devotion and capacity, you may also donate utensils made of copper, bronze, or brass. Always make donations according to your own happiness and financial means. A donation made for the sake of show or under pressure never yields fruitful results. God accepts whatever is offered with a sincere heart after a morning bath.
