Periods usually last for three to five days every month. However, some women have shorter periods, lasting only one to two days. However, this sudden change in the period cycle can be worrisome. The duration of your period cycle can vary, sometimes from month to month depending on many different factors such as stress, excessive exercise, or other hormonal changes. Read on to understand the causes of a short-period cycle.

Is it normal to have a short period?
Period duration can vary from woman to woman. Usually, a period cycle should last for three to seven days, but it can be shorter or longer. There are many causes of short periods, and they are considered normal if your menstrual cycle is of the same duration every month. So, you need to check what is normal for you. But if your menstrual cycle duration suddenly changes, you may need to get it checked by a doctor. Apart from the duration, the smell of your menstrual bleeding can also indicate different things, and you need to get it checked.
What causes a short-period cycle
There can be many reasons for a short period. Here are some of them:
1. Stress
Stress is one of the biggest reasons for a short period. If you had your period for just a day and then it stopped, check your stress levels. Increased stress levels can cause your period to last for only a few days, as stress can adversely affect hormones. Once your stress levels are reduced, your period duration is likely to return to normal. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, women in stressful jobs are more likely to have a short period cycle.
2. Intense exercise
The way you exercise can cause abnormal periods. If you are exercising too much, it can interfere with the secretion of hormones that regulate ovulation, resulting in shorter periods.
3. Taking certain types of medications
Certain medications such as blood control pills, blood thinners, and steroids can also cause shorter periods. These can contribute to a shorter period cycle. A study published in BMJ suggests that steroids can also affect menstruation.
4. Other diseases
Medical conditions such as PCOS, thyroid, and certain sexually transmitted diseases can also cause shorter period cycles. Conditions such as PCOS can lead to irregular menstrual cycles as well as other factors such as weight gain and mood swings.
5. Poor ovulation
Other reasons for a short period cycle can include poor ovulation. This is known as anovulation, and it can cause lighter or irregular menstrual cycles. However, long cycles can also indicate that ovulation is not happening properly. A simple ovulation strip can help you determine this.
Can one day cycle be a sign of pregnancy?
There can be many reasons for a short period cycle, and being pregnant can be one of them. A short menstrual cycle can mean that you are pregnant. Some women go through implantation bleeding. There are some factors to determine what kind of bleeding you are having, such as the color and timing of the blood. Implantation bleeding is lighter than a normal period. The color of the blood can be dark brown or pinkish red. While the color of period blood can be dark red.
What are the reasons for periods lasting only 2 days?
Another reason for a short period is that your body is not producing enough estrogen, which is needed to build the endometrium, which is shed during periods if there is no pregnancy. According to Dr. Asha Hiremath, Gynecology and Obstetrics and Laparoscopic Surgeon, “If your body lacks estrogen, the endometrium will not be thick enough and hence the blood flow is reduced. Irregular period cycles can also mean that if you are just entering puberty, your periods have not become regular yet as your hormones, especially estrogen, take time to balance out.” If you are over 45 years of age, periods lasting only one or two days can also be a sign that menopause is approaching.
