Do you also assume that baggage limits apply only to flights? If so, you should know that Indian Railways, too, has its own strict baggage regulations. Passengers carrying luggage exceeding the prescribed limit during train travel may face heavy fines.
These railway rules have been formulated with the comfort and safety of all passengers in mind. Therefore, before embarking on your next train journey, be sure to check the specific free baggage allowance applicable to your ticket class.
**Baggage Limits for Different Classes**
Indian Railways has established distinct baggage allowances for each class of travel:
**AC First Class (1A):** Passengers in this class are permitted to carry up to 70 kilograms of luggage free of charge.
**AC Two-Tier (2A):** The free baggage allowance for this class is set at 50 kilograms.
**AC Three-Tier (3A) and Sleeper Class (SL):** Passengers in both these categories may carry up to 40 kilograms of luggage with them.
**Second Sitting (2S):** In the General or Second Sitting class, this limit is the lowest, standing at 35 kilograms.
**Points to Keep in Mind**
**Free Limit:** This refers to the maximum weight you are allowed to carry into the coach with you without incurring any additional charges.
**Marginal Allowance:** A slight allowance is granted for carrying luggage that exceeds the free limit; however, you must pay for this excess weight according to the prescribed baggage rates.
**Maximum Limit:** This represents the absolute upper limit of luggage weight that you are permitted to carry inside the coach, even after paying the applicable charges. If your luggage exceeds this maximum limit, it is mandatory to book it for transport in the parcel van. Failure to do so may result in heavy penalties.

**Pay Attention to Baggage Dimensions**
It is not just the weight—the physical dimensions of your bags or suitcases also matter. To carry personal luggage inside the coach, the maximum permissible dimensions for any single item are: 100 cm × 60 cm × 25 cm. If you have luggage that exceeds this prescribed size—even if it is lightweight—you should book it separately as parcel luggage.
