In Sanatan Dharma, several dates are considered to have immense religious and spiritual significance. One of these auspicious dates is Basant Panchami. This day is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, wisdom, art, and music. It is believed that Goddess Saraswati manifested on this day, hence there is a special ritual for her worship on this date. This year, Basant Panchami will be celebrated on January 23, 2026. On this day, Goddess Saraswati will be worshipped throughout the country. A special feature of Basant Panchami is that no specific auspicious time (muhurta) is required for worship. Devotees can perform prayers, havans (fire rituals), and worship throughout the day without consulting an auspicious time.

What the Astrologer of Deoghar Says:
According to Pandit Nand Kishore Mudgal, a renowned astrologer from Mudgal Jyotish Kendra at Pagalbaba Ashram in Deoghar, Basant Panchami is especially fruitful for students. It is considered an auspicious day to begin studies, writing practice, and new educational pursuits. Basant Panchami is also considered special because it is called an Abujh Muhurta. Abujh Muhurta means a time when there is no need to consult a separate auspicious time for any शुभ (auspicious) work. Starting a new business, entering a new house, buying and selling, or other auspicious activities can be done on this day. In the scriptures, Abujh Muhurta is considered the best of all auspicious times.
No Auspicious Ceremonies on Basant Panchami This Year:
However, this year, due to an important astrological reason, auspicious ceremonies will not be performed on Basant Panchami. According to astrologers, for any auspicious ceremony, not only the date and time but also the position of the planets and constellations are considered. This year, the planet Venus will be in a retrograde position on Basant Panchami. Venus is considered the significator of marriage, love, happiness, and marital life. When Venus is retrograde, auspicious ceremonies like marriage are not considered शुभ (auspicious). Therefore, even though Basant Panchami is an Abujh Muhurta, marriages and other major auspicious ceremonies will not be performed on this day.
However, this day will be extremely auspicious for worshipping Goddess Saraswati, starting studies, performing religious rituals, and beginning new ventures. Thus, Basant Panchami will be celebrated on January 23rd with devotion, reverence, and a quest for knowledge, and with the blessings of Goddess Saraswati, wisdom and discernment will be bestowed upon our lives.
