Airport News: Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport has taken a unique initiative to make air travel convenient. Under this initiative, for the first time in India, a special sensory room has been created at an airport for neurodivergent passengers and people suffering from sensitivity problems. This sensory room is located near the 80 International Lounge on Level 4 of Terminal 2. This room has been specially designed keeping in mind the needs of those passengers who are troubled by excessive noise, light, and crowd.

It is worth mentioning that the atmosphere of the airport terminal can be disturbing for many passengers. These passengers are particularly disturbed by the bright lights of the terminal, constant announcements, security check procedures, and overcrowding. This environment also disturbs passengers suffering from other mental health problems including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), Anxiety Disorders, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
In addition, passengers who are neurodivergent or who have family members with small children, elderly, or any kind of sensitivity related to mental health often feel uncomfortable during air travel. To solve this problem, Bengaluru Airport has started this sensory room, which provides a calm, comfortable environment. This room will help passengers feel mentally calm and stable before the flight so that they can enjoy a smooth and stress-free journey.
How is the sensory room designed?
This sensory room has been designed based on behavioral science and occupational therapy research. Research shows that if just 15 to 30 minutes are spent in a calm and sensory-friendly environment, it can reduce mental stress to a great extent. This will not only make neurodivergent children and adults feel more comfortable during the journey, but they can also be mentally prepared for their flight.
Some features of the sensory room
This sensory room of Bengaluru airport has been designed with many unique features keeping in mind the needs of the passengers, which makes it very special:
Lighting and visual stimulation: Bubble tubes, galaxy projectors, and LED cubes installed in the sensory room will provide visual peace to the passengers. Also, it creates an environment that makes the passengers feel calm. Apart from this, the art mural with vibrant colors and patterns on the walls also helps in increasing mental balance and positivity.
Helpful in controlling touch and sensitivity: Optical curtains, infinity mirrors and tactile wall panels have been installed in the sensory room, which helps in balancing touch and visual experience. Apart from this, the therapy mat, weighted blanket and crash pad available in the room provide comfort and mental stability to the passengers.

Sound and smell control: White noise machines and sound systems are installed in this room, which reduce external noise and provide a calm environment to the passengers. Scent diffusers and aroma therapy equipment help in reducing stress and maintaining freshness.
