Arthritis- the problem of joint pain is being seen in people of all ages. Until a few decades ago, it was known only as a problem associated with aging; however, now even younger people are falling prey to it. If you often ignore stiffness in the joints as soon as you wake up in the morning, pain in the knees while climbing stairs, or swelling in the fingers and toes, then it can cause serious problems. These can be early signs of arthritis.

Research shows that women are at a higher risk of arthritis than men. It is not just a matter of age or calcium deficiency, but hormonal changes, immune system reactions, and lifestyle problems can also increase the risk.

Cases of arthritis in women
A study published in the American College of Rheumatology shows that the estrogen hormone plays an important role in protecting bones and joints. After menopause (usually at age 50), the decrease in estrogen levels also reduces the strength of bones and joints in women, which increases the risk of arthritis.
According to the report of the National Institute of Health (NIH), rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that is seen 2-3 times more in women than in men.
Apart from this, weight gain during pregnancy and delivery, and pressure on the pelvic bones further increase the chances of arthritis in the knees and hips.
Why is this risk increasing?
Data from the World Health Organization shows that after 40 years, 60% of women start showing symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. In India, 70% of women are suffering from vitamin D deficiency, which can be a condition that can increase problems for the health of the joints.
However, the good thing is that you can reduce the risk of arthritis by taking care of some things in advance. Lack of physical activity, weight gain, and improper diet can increase your risk of arthritis, so it is important that you keep your lifestyle right.
Which women should be more careful?
Not all women need to suffer from arthritis; however, some people should take extra precautions.
Women after menopause should be more careful. Hormonal changes weaken the joints, which can put you at greater risk. Apart from this, women who are pregnant or have recently become mothers, whose family members have already had arthritis, and women suffering from overweight or obesity are also at higher risk; they should take special precautions.

What can you do to avoid arthritis?
Eating nutritious food like things rich in calcium and vitamin D, like milk, curd, cheese, and green vegetables is beneficial for you.
Include omega-3 fatty acids (fish, walnuts, flax seeds) and anti-inflammatory foods (turmeric, garlic, ginger) in the diet.
Exercise regularly: Exercises like gentle stretching and yoga are beneficial. Walking, cycling and swimming can help keep joints flexible.
Being overweight also increases pressure on the knees, so lose weight.
Consult a doctor about bone health after menopause to maintain hormonal balance.
