Thyroid disorders often cause significant difficulties, and the condition is most prevalent among women. If you are also struggling with thyroid issues, this information is for you. Dr. Jyoti Singh, a doctor at the Divisional Hospital, has shared details regarding the symptoms, prevention, and dietary habits associated with thyroid disorders. She explained that common symptoms include weight gain, breathing difficulties, fatigue, and sweating in the feet. Thyroid issues in women are largely attributed to an improper daily routine; however, by maintaining a healthy routine and diet, the condition can be managed or alleviated by up to 80 percent.

Dietitian Dr. Jyoti Singh noted that thyroid disorders are generally more common in women, with one or two women in almost every household suffering from the condition. She clarified that a thyroid disorder is not a disease in the traditional sense but rather a medical condition. It occurs when the thyroid gland becomes inflamed or develops other issues, leading to either an underproduction or overproduction of hormones.
There are many causes for this, primarily a poor lifestyle. A major reason for its prevalence among women is that they often neglect their own well-being, failing to eat or rest on time. Although they may consume home-cooked meals, their eating habits lack punctuality, and their intake of water and fiber is often inadequate; they tend to eat whatever is available, whenever it is available, while continuing with their daily tasks.
Negligence Leads to Thyroid Issues
Dr. Jyoti Singh emphasized that negligence is a major factor in the development of thyroid disorders. Paying attention to habits—such as sleeping and waking up on time—can provide significant relief. Symptoms to watch out for include weight gain, irregular periods, and hair loss; these are among the key indicators of a thyroid issue. Additionally, symptoms such as shortness of breath, sweating in the hands and feet, sudden fluctuations in body temperature (rising or falling), and cold extremities are also associated with thyroid issues.
**Can Thyroid Issues Be Resolved?**
Dr. Jyoti Singh stated that her case studies show thyroid issues can be completely resolved. Improving your lifestyle increases the chances of reversing the condition by up to 80 percent. The first step is sleeping on time—go to bed by 10:00, 10:30, or 11:00 PM and wake up by 6:00 or, at the latest, 7:00 AM. Eat a healthy diet throughout the day; increase your intake of lentils (dal) and lentil-based dishes, eggs, paneer (cottage cheese), and soybeans, while reducing your consumption of roti and rice.
**Dietary Considerations**
Dr. Jyoti Singh advises increasing your intake of green vegetables and salads while avoiding processed and packaged foods. Ensure you consume essential nutrients; for instance, use iodized salt. For selenium, include Brazil nuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, or white sesame seeds in your diet. Incorporate coconut as well. The nutrients found in these foods support the thyroid gland and are highly beneficial, aiding in the recovery of your thyroid health.
**Foods to Avoid**
Dr. Jyoti Singh emphasizes that the first thing to avoid is processed and packaged food. This includes items like instant noodles (e.g., Maggi), sauces, bread, biscuits, savory snacks (namkeen), pizza, and burgers. You should steer clear of all such processed items. Secondly, many people consume cruciferous vegetables—such as cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli—as well as mustard oil or mustard sauce; these items should be avoided.
