The work of the heart is to pump blood throughout our body. If someone tells you that you have not one but two hearts in your body, will you believe it?

All of you know that there is only one heart in the body. Which is present in the chest and does the work of pumping blood. Let us tell you that when the heart pumps blood, a heartbeat is produced. From here, the blood spreads throughout the body, but a part of our legs is also called the 'second heart' of the body.
Yes, the calf muscles are called the second heart of the body, which is our calf. It is an important organ, like the heart. It needs to remain healthy and right. Today we are going to give you complete information about its functioning. Let us know in detail-
What are calf muscles?
The doctor told that calf muscles are in the lower part of the legs, below the knees and above the ankles. They are made up of two muscles- the Gastrocnemius and the Soleus. These muscles help in tasks like walking, running, and climbing stairs.
Why is it called the second heart?
When our heart pumps blood throughout the body, it also reaches the feet. But to bring this blood back to the heart, one has to work against gravity. In such a situation, calf muscles prove to be helpful. It works like a pump and transports blood from the bottom to the top, i.e., from the feet back to the heart. Due to these features, these muscles are called the Peripheral Heart.
How do they work?
Whenever we walk, run, or move our legs, the calf muscles contract and expand. They pump blood upwards by pressing the blood vessels with every movement.
There are small valves in the veins of the legs. They allow blood to move in only one direction. These valves open and close with the pressure of the calf muscles. This helps in sending blood back to the heart.
If these muscles become weak or you sit or stand for a long time, the blood flow slows down. This can cause problems like swelling or heaviness in the legs.
