Chaitra Navratri Akhand Jyoti Niyam: The festival of Chaitra Navratri is a special time for the worship and adoration of Goddess Durga, which is celebrated every year by devotees with reverence and devotion. During this, a religious tradition is especially followed, which is called "Akhand Jyoti Jalana". Akhand Jyoti means a flame that burns continuously for 9 days, and it is specially lit at the time of Ghatasthapana on the first day of Navratri. It is seen as a blessing of Mother Durga and is considered a symbol of happiness, peace, and prosperity in the house.

There is an important religious belief behind lighting the Akhand Jyoti that by lighting it, the goddess resides in the house, and the family receives positive energy and blessings. But it is important to light it correctly and follow the rules so that its full benefit can be obtained. Now let us know what are the special rules while lighting the Akhand Jyoti.
Importance of lighting Akhand Jyoti
Lighting the Akhand Jyoti holds special significance during Navratri. According to religious beliefs, this flame is lit to fulfill the special wishes of the devotees. If a person keeps the lamp lit continuously for 9 days, it is called Akhand Jyoti. It is believed that Maa Durga is pleased with the flame burning in this way and her blessings are received.
It is considered inauspicious for the Akhand Jyoti to be extinguished, so it is important to keep it always lit. During Navratri, there is special significance of lighting it from Pratipada to Dashami Tithi. By doing this, blessings of Maa Durga are received and happiness, peace, and prosperity remain in the house. This tradition not only strengthens religious faith, but it also transmits positive energy, which brings happiness in the life of every member of the family.
Rule of lighting Akhand Jyoti
Akhand Jyoti should be lit continuously from Pratipada Tithi to Dashami Tithi. This is especially important during Navratri, because this lamp keeps burning for the entire 9 days, due to which the blessings of Goddess Durga remain.
Use pure oil (ghee or mustard oil) in the lamp and place it on top of rice, barley, or wheat. This material should be pure and sattvik. Broken rice should not be used, as it is considered impure.
While lighting the Jyot, one should chant the mantra "Karoti Kalyanam, Arogyam Dhan Sampadaam, Shatru Buddhi Vinaashay, Deepam Jyoti Namostute". This mantra is to bring happiness, peace, and prosperity in the house as well as protection from enemies and health.
Never leave the Akhand Jyoti unattended. This means keeping the Jyot burning. If it gets extinguished due to any reason, then immediately re-light it and keep it in the right position. The extinguishing of the Jyot is considered inauspicious.
Take special care of the cleanliness of the entire place where the Akhand Jyoti is burning. Keep the place clean and keep the atmosphere of the house calm so that no negative energy comes.
Be completely devoted and attentive in the worship. When you light the Akhand Jyoti, take it as a religious ritual and do it with reverence, faith, and pure feelings. Avoid negativity and confusion, so that you can get the blessings of Maa Durga.
By following these rules, the special blessings of Maa Durga remain, and happiness, prosperity, and peace reside in the house.

What to do if the Akhand Jyoti extinguishes?
It is considered inauspicious for the Akhand Jyoti to extinguish because there is a tradition to keep it burning continuously. If this happens, first apologize to Maa Durga and pray to her to maintain the happiness, peace and blessings in your house. After this, light a small lamp near the Akhand Jyoti, so that the Akhand Jyoti can be lit again with the light of this lamp.
If the Jyot is still burning after Navratri, then instead of extinguishing it yourself, let it cool down automatically. It is considered inauspicious to extinguish it or interfere with it due to any external reason. Therefore, as the oil in the lamp gets exhausted, it should be allowed to extinguish naturally. This ensures that the flame extinguishes properly.
