Chaitra Navratri: Navratri festivities begin across the nation today; worship Goddess Shailputri on the first day..

Chaitra Navratri – Day 1: Chaitra Navratri commences today, Thursday, March 19. According to religious scriptures, Navratri is a divine period dedicated to the worship, solemn vows, spiritual practice (sadhana), and attainment of spiritual powers (siddhis) associated with Goddess Bhagavati. It also presents a golden opportunity to maintain the physical and mental well-being of the body and mind. According to the *Devi Bhagavata*, it is the Goddess herself who, in the forms of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva), performs the creation, preservation, and destruction of the universe.

At the behest of Lord Mahadev, Mother Parvati assumed countless forms to vanquish demons such as Raktabija, Shumbha-Nishumbha, and Madhu-Kaitabha; however, it is the nine principal forms of the Goddess that are primarily revered and worshipped. Each day of Navratri is dedicated to a specific manifestation of the Divine Mother, and worshipping each distinct form is believed to fulfill various specific desires and aspirations. On the first day of Navratri—specifically the *Pratipada* (first day) of the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Chaitra—the worship of the Mother's first form, *Maa Shailputri*, is performed alongside the ritual of *Kalash Sthapana* (installation of the sacred pot). Let us explore the complete worship procedure and significance associated with this day.

The Commencement of Day One and the Worship of Shailputri
On the first day of Navratri worship, immediately following the *Kalash Sthapana* ritual, the first manifestation of Mother Durga—known as 'Shailputri'—is worshipped. Chaitra Navratri begins on April 19, 2026, marking the very day on which the spiritual *sadhana* (practice) officially commences. For the spiritual seeker (*sadhak*), this day symbolizes faith and resolve, serving as the starting point for a spiritual journey that spans the entire nine-day festival.

The Iconography and Spiritual Significance of Shailputri
She is known as *Shailputri* (Daughter of the Mountain) by virtue of being the daughter of the King of Mountains, Himalaya. Seated upon a bull (*Vrishabha*), this Divine Mother is adorned with a trident (*Trishul*) in her right hand and a lotus flower in her left. Among the *Navadurgas* (the nine forms of Durga), Shailputri holds a position of immense significance as the very first manifestation. Worshipping her is believed to awaken the *Muladhara Chakra* (Root Chakra); this awakening marks the inception of one's yogic journey, thereby establishing stability and equilibrium in the life of the spiritual seeker.

The Worship Procedure for Shailputri
On the first day of Navratri, after completing your morning ablutions (such as bathing), wear clean attire and ritually purify the designated place of worship.
Thereafter, perform the *Kalash Sthapana* ritual in accordance with the prescribed rites and procedures. Install an idol or image of Mother Shailputri and purify it with holy Ganges water.
Thereafter, offer *Roli* (vermilion), *Akshat* (sacred rice grains), flowers, and—specifically—fragrant blossoms.
It is considered auspicious to offer white garments, a ghee lamp, and—as *Naivedya* (sacred food offering)—pure ghee or a sweet preparation made from it to the Mother Goddess.
During the worship, chant the mantra ‘Om Devi Shailputryai Namah’ and perform the *Aarti* with deep reverence.
Finally, meditate upon the Goddess while holding your heartfelt wishes in your mind.

The Fruits of Worship and the Impact of Grace
Mother Shailputri is an embodiment of Goddess Parvati herself; she is swiftly pleased when worshipped with simplicity and sincerity, and she grants her devotees their desired boons. Her grace infuses one's life with stability, mental peace, and positive energy. Worship performed with faith and devotion infuses the spiritual seeker's life with renewed vitality.

The Foundation of Inner Strength and Mental Stability
If one's mind feels restless or if one senses a lack of inner strength, the worship of Shailputri is considered particularly beneficial. Devotion to her fosters the development of courage, patience, and self-confidence within an individual. This spiritual practice strengthens the foundational basis of one's life and inspires the individual to advance further along the spiritual path.
