Chaturmas 2026: When does Chaturmas begin? Find out when auspicious activities will be suspended in July..

Chaturmas 2026 Start Date: In Sanatan Dharma, Chaturmas is considered a highly sacred period for spiritual practice, self-purification, and a disciplined life. The word 'Chaturmas' literally signifies four months, extending from *Devshayani Ekadashi* (in the bright fortnight of the *Ashadha* month) to *Devprabodhini Ekadashi* (in the month of *Kartik*). This time is regarded as crucial not only from a religious perspective but also for lifestyle and health.

What happens during Chaturmas?
According to mythological beliefs, during these four months, Lord Vishnu enters a state of *Yoga Nidra* (divine slumber) on the serpent Sheshnag in the *Kshir Sagar* (Cosmic Ocean of Milk). Consequently, this period is viewed as a time of rest for the deities. During this time, the responsibility of governing the universe is believed to rest with Lord Shiva. Since Lord Vishnu is in a state of slumber, there is a tradition of postponing auspicious events like weddings and housewarming ceremonies (*Griha Pravesh*); conversely, it is considered the best time for worship, fasting, and penance.

When is Chaturmas 2026?

In the year 2026, this sacred period will begin on July 25 and continue until November 20. During these four months, individuals are advised to lead a restrained life, exercise control over their senses, and remain immersed in devotion to the Divine. Religious belief holds that the spiritual merit (*punya*) gained from chanting (*japa*), penance (*tapa*), and charity (*daan*) during this time is manifold. Devotion to Lord Shiva during the month of *Sawan*, and the worship of Lord Krishna and Lord Ganesha during the month of *Bhadrapad*, hold special significance.

Dos and Don'ts during Chaturmas

From a scientific perspective, this period coincides with the monsoon season, when humidity levels rise, and digestive power may weaken. There is also an increased risk of infections and illnesses. For this reason, special emphasis is placed on consuming *Sattvic* food and observing fasts to keep the body healthy and balanced.

Things to Avoid

Adhering to specific guidelines regarding diet and lifestyle is considered essential during Chaturmas. For instance, this involves abstaining from green leafy vegetables during *Shravan*, giving up curd in *Bhadrapada*, reducing milk consumption in *Ashwin*, and avoiding certain specific lentils in *Kartik*.
Additionally, it is advised to stay away from *Tamasic* foods such as meat, alcohol, onions, and garlic.

**Practices to Follow**

During this period, observances such as sleeping on the ground, practicing celibacy, speaking the truth, and maintaining silence are also followed.
Conversely, it is considered auspicious to postpone activities like weddings, housewarming ceremonies, tonsure rituals (*Mundan*), the sacred thread ceremony (*Janeu Sanskar*), and the launch of new businesses during this time.
Thus, *Chaturmas* guides an individual toward a path of discipline, self-restraint, and spiritual growth.
