If you are planning to travel by air soon, then this is important news for you. Flight tickets may become expensive due to the proposed fee hike at Delhi Airport. Due to this, the fare of domestic flights is likely to increase by 1.5-2%. Why are the prices increasing and how will it directly affect the passengers? Let us know.

Air passengers will have to loosen their pockets a little more due to the proposed fee hike at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport). According to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which operates the airport, this change may increase the fare of domestic flights by 1.5 to 2%, while the fare of international flights will increase by less than 1%.
How much will it affect passengers?
At present, a user development fee (UDF) of Rs 77 per person is charged to passengers at the airport, which is proposed to be increased to Rs 370. Of this, 30% will be the airline fee and 70% will be the passenger fee.
Why is the fee being increased?
DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said that this increase is being done to improve airport infrastructure and provide better facilities. This will be an increase of 140% since 2006 when the GMR Group took over the operation of the airport.
When will the new fee be implemented?
The Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) is currently considering this proposal. If it gets approved, then this fee will be applicable from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2029.
What does this change mean for passengers?
If this proposal is approved, there will be a slight increase in domestic airfares, but this increase will not be so much that it will have a huge impact on the passengers. Airlines can pass on this burden to the passengers, which may lead to a slight increase in ticket prices.
