What to do on Dhanteras?
Buying gold, silver, or jewelry made from these materials is considered very auspicious on this day. It is believed to increase wealth 13-fold.
Buying brass or copper utensils is especially auspicious on this day, as brass is considered the metal of Lord Dhanvantari.
A broom is considered a symbol of Goddess Lakshmi. Buying a new broom on this day removes poverty from the home.
Buying coriander seeds on this day brings immense wealth.
On this day, worship of Lord Dhanvantari should be performed in the evening during the Pradosh period. This bestows the family with the blessing of good health.
Worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and Kubera, the god of wealth, on this day fulfills wishes for wealth and prosperity.
On this evening, a lamp is lit for Yamraj at the main entrance.
What Not to Do on Dhanteras?
One should not buy knives, scissors, or sharp or pointed objects made of iron on this day, as buying iron is considered inauspicious.
Buying glassware or plastic items on this day is not considered auspicious.
One should not lend money or any item to anyone on Dhanteras, as it is believed that doing so drives Lakshmi away from the home.

Avoid consuming meat, alcohol, or tamasic food on this day.
The house should not be left empty in the evening on this day.
