In Hinduism, a coconut is traditionally broken before commencing any auspicious undertaking—such as a *Griha Pravesh* (housewarming ceremony), the purchase of a new vehicle, or a religious *Puja* (worship ritual). Without this act, the ritual or auspicious event is considered incomplete. While this tradition has existed for a long time, the act of breaking a coconut is strictly prohibited for women.

**Why Women Do Not Break Coconuts**
According to religious beliefs, women are forbidden from breaking coconuts in Hinduism. As per the scriptures, a coconut is essentially a seed; it is from this very seed that a new tree originates. Women are the givers of life—those who bring new life into the world. Therefore, women are prohibited from breaking coconuts. It is believed that if a woman were to break a coconut, her own children might have to face various difficulties and problems in their lives.
**The Religious Significance of the Coconut**
The coconut is an indispensable element in all religious worship rituals (*Puja*). It is believed that without its inclusion, one cannot attain the full spiritual benefits of the worship. According to religious lore, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi (the Mother of Wealth) were the first to plant the *Kalpavriksha*—the celestial wish-fulfilling tree. The coconut tree is also revered as a manifestation of this *Kalpavriksha*.
**How Should the Coconut Be Placed During Worship?**
If you are performing *Kalash Sthapana* (the ceremonial installation of a sacred pot) during your worship, the "eye" (or face) of the coconut should be facing towards you. The coconut should be placed horizontally atop the *Kalash* (sacred pot); under no circumstances should it be placed in an upright, standing position.
**Avoid Placing the Coconut in This Direction:**
The coconut used in worship rituals should strictly *never* be placed in the South direction. It is believed that placing the coconut in this direction invites negative energy into the home. Furthermore, it is thought that doing so may cause various troubles and difficulties for the members of the family.
**Points to Keep in Mind**
Only a fresh, water-filled coconut should be offered during worship.
Dried-out coconuts should not be offered during worship rituals.
A rotten or damaged (broken/cracked) coconut must not be included in the worship.
Before the ritual begins, cleanse the coconut with water or *Gangajal* (holy water from the Ganges). A *tilak* of *roli*, turmeric, and *akshat* should be applied to the coconut.
If the coconut is to be broken after the *puja*, it should be broken in a clean area.
The coconut offered to the deity should be distributed among everyone as *prasad* after the *puja*.
