Let's understand this health problem in detail.
Difficulty breathing (dyspnea)
Dyspnea, a condition characterized by difficulty breathing, is not a disease but is considered a symptom of several internal illnesses. Respiratory or cardiovascular system problems, such as asthma, pneumonia, heart failure, or anemia, can cause dyspnea.
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath can last from a short to a long periods. Sometimes, dyspnea is difficult to diagnose and treat because it can have many different causes. This condition is more common in older people.
Why does this problem occur?
Several factors can contribute to shortness of breath. Some people also experience shortness of breath when traveling to high altitudes or experiencing temperature changes. In some cases, this shortness of breath can be linked to serious health problems.
Conditions such as asthma, stress, heart disease, airway obstruction, allergic reactions, anemia, or iron deficiency can also cause dyspnea. Heart failure, low or high blood pressure, and pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in a lung artery) can also contribute to dyspnea.
What are the symptoms of dyspnea?
Dyspnea, or shortness of breath, has some common symptoms that warrant prompt identification and treatment. If dyspnea occurs suddenly or symptoms are severe, it may be a sign of a serious medical condition.
Shortness of breath after exertion
Difficulty breathing
Chest tightness
Rapid breathing
Feeling of suffocation
Rapid heartbeat
Persistent wheezing or coughing.
Treatment and prevention of dyspnea
Treatment for breathing problems depends on the cause.
Shortness of breath due to exertion may improve with a short break and rest. In more severe cases, a person may need oxygen. People with asthma or COPD may need medical attention. Those with pre-existing breathing problems are advised to continue taking certain preventive measures.

Avoid cigarettes or second-hand smoke.
Chemical fumes and wood smoke should be avoided.
Yoga and exercise help strengthen the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
