Ear Piercings: What is the best age to get a child's ears pierced? Keep these 7 things in mind when getting ear piercings..

Ear Piercing in Kids: Ear piercing is a common tradition for children in India. However, there is a right age for it. Getting a child's ears pierced too early can lead to serious complications. In this regard, pediatrician Anuradha shared a video on her Instagram handle. In this video, the doctor explained the correct age for ear piercing in children. Let's learn more about this and also understand what precautions are necessary when getting ear piercings.

Number 1 - At what age should children's ears be pierced?
The doctor says that you can get your child's ears pierced anytime after they are 6 months old. By this age, the child's immunity, or ability to fight diseases, has developed. However, if you want to do it earlier, you can get their ears pierced after 4 months, provided the child has received three doses of the DTP vaccine. Do not get your child's ears pierced before 4 months of age.

Number 2 - Always apply numbing cream.
Pain in the ear is common during ear piercing. Therefore, apply a good numbing cream to the child's ears at least 45 minutes beforehand.

Number 3 - Pay attention to hygiene
The pediatrician says that cleanliness is the most important thing when getting ears pierced. Nowadays, piercing is mostly done in two ways: gun piercing and needle piercing. Gun piercing is generally considered better. However, you can try either method. Just make sure that sterilization rules are followed in both methods. Dirty equipment can increase the risk of infection. Only use a piercing gun if it has single-use cartridges.

Number 4 - Choosing the right type of earrings
Choosing the right type of earrings after ear piercing is very important. The doctor advises using gold studs or medical-grade stainless steel earrings for children. These reduce the risk of allergies. Avoid wearing heavy or dangling earrings, as the child might pull on them, which could worsen the wound.

Number 5 - Aftercare
Aftercare is equally important. After getting the ears pierced, clean the area once a day for 5 to 7 days with an antiseptic recommended by the doctor. Also, rotate the earring once after cleaning. This prevents the earring from sticking to the ear and reduces the risk of infection.

Number 6 - Pay attention to signs of infection
If the child's ear shows swelling, redness, or pain, consult a doctor immediately. This could be due to an infection, which requires timely treatment.

Number 7 - How long to keep the earrings in
Apart from all this, doctors recommend keeping the earrings in for at least 6 weeks. Removing them before this time could cause the ear piercings to close up.

So, when you get your child's ears pierced, be sure to keep these 7 points in mind. This will help protect your child from infection and any discomfort.
