Emotional intelligence and academic success: Children's emotions are the key to real success, not grades..

In an article published in The Daily Star, American psychologist Daniel Goleman said that emotional intelligence (EQ) is much more important than traditional intelligence (IQ). It helps a person to understand, control, and be sensitive to his own and others' emotions.

However, often parents do not give it much priority because in previous generations there was not much emphasis on teaching it. But an aware generation can change this trend and make children more emotionally capable. If you want to develop EQ in your child, then adopt these easy methods.

Let children express their feelings - Make children feel that their feelings are important. If they are angry or sad about something, then understand their feelings instead of scolding or ignoring them. Young children are often unable to express their thoughts in the right words, so parents should recognize their feelings and give them the right words. Like - "I understand that you are very upset about this..." Such sentences will help in their emotional development. This will not only help them manage their own emotions better but will also make them sensitive towards others.

Give small responsibilities- Assigning small responsibilities to children makes them self-reliant and responsible. Assign them tasks like fixing their bed, setting the table, or watering the plants. This will make them understand that every work requires hard work and it will make them more empathetic towards society. When children fulfill a responsibility, they become self-reliant as well as understand the importance of hard work and teamwork.

Celebrate small victories- Encourage your child to participate in every task and appreciate their efforts, whether they win or not. This will make them understand that real success lies in constant effort. Recognize children's unique abilities instead of comparing them with others. Also, give them the freedom to make mistakes, but teach them that it is important to learn something from every mistake.

Be an example yourself- Children learn what they see their parents doing. Research shows that up to the age of seven, children learn a lot by imitating. If you want your child to read books, then develop a habit of reading yourself. If you want them to be kind, then you should also treat others with respect. Children learn patience, empathy, and self-control by observing your behavior.

Emotionally intelligent children not only improve their relationships but also develop more patience and empathy in their lives. This quality helps them to become strong and successful people in the future. Remember that children are like raw pots, if you give them a good shape before they are ripe, they will remain strong and in the right shape throughout their lives.
