Would you believe it if we told you that, despite being an Indian citizen, you need special permission to visit certain states in India? It might sound surprising, but it is absolutely true.

The states located in India's Northeast attract many tourists with their beauty and culture; however, simply booking a train or flight ticket isn't enough to visit them. You need a specific document known as the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter these regions. Let’s find out which states require an ILP and why.
What is an Inner Line Permit?
An Inner Line Permit is an official travel document issued by the respective state government. It allows Indian citizens to visit or stay in specific states for a limited period. The rule differs slightly for foreign tourists; instead of an ILP, they are required to obtain a Protected Area Permit.
Which states require an ILP?
You need an ILP to visit the Northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Manipur. While these states are stunning and draw visitors with their natural beauty, obtaining an ILP is mandatory to protect the local tribal communities and their cultures. The state government does not grant permission to enter these states without this permit.
Why was the ILP introduced?
This rule dates back to the British era. It was introduced under the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation Act of 1873. At the time, the British were expanding tea plantations and the timber trade. The ILP was introduced to regulate trade and avoid conflicts with tribal communities.
The rule remained in place even after independence, though its purpose shifted. The objective of the ILP is no longer to promote trade; instead, it serves to protect tribal communities and their cultures from external influence. This rule ensures that outsiders cannot encroach upon the land and resources belonging to the tribal communities of these states.
How can one obtain an ILP?
You can apply for an Inner Line Permit (ILP) from the comfort of your home via the respective state government's official portal or mobile app. Alternatively, you can obtain the permit offline.
Permits can be obtained from counters located at government buildings or airports within these states. All you need is an official ID, travel documents, and a recent passport-sized photograph.
