The incidence of conjunctivitis, or "pink eye," rises significantly during the rainy season, but it can spread even more rapidly in office environments. Office settings often involve people sitting and working together in the same space for hours, sharing facilities like meeting rooms, pantries, printers, and tables. Since multiple people touch these shared items throughout the day, the risk of conjunctivitis spreading increases substantially.

Negligence regarding hygiene and safety precautions can accelerate the spread of this condition. Therefore, let us look at what measures can be taken to avoid contracting conjunctivitis during this season.
What is conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis is an inflammation or infection of the thin membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. When this membrane becomes inflamed, the eye appears red or pink; hence, it is commonly known as "pink eye."
This condition can arise from various causes, such as viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or exposure to dust and other irritants. While allergic conjunctivitis does not spread from person to person, pink eye caused by viral or bacterial infections is highly contagious.
How does conjunctivitis spread?
Touching contaminated objects in the office
Sharing towels or hand towels
Sharing eye makeup products
Using someone else's contact lenses or eyeglasses
Being in an enclosed space with an infected person can also lead to the spread of the infection.
What are the symptoms of conjunctivitis?
Symptoms caused by the infection include redness or a pinkish appearance of the eyes, constant watering, a burning or itching sensation, a feeling of something pricking the eye, swollen eyelids, sticky discharge, or the sensation that a foreign object is stuck in the eye. Bacterial conjunctivitis causes eye discharge that makes the eyelids stick together after waking up. It is important to consult a doctor as soon as these symptoms appear.
How to stay safe at the office?
Wash your hands frequently. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. It is essential to clean items like keyboards, mice, telephones, and desks. If you use shared equipment, sanitize your hands immediately afterward and avoid touching your eyes. Do not share personal items such as cosmetics, eye drops, or contact lenses with others. If you have contracted conjunctivitis, do not come to the office until you have recovered.
When should you consult a doctor?
It is crucial to contact a doctor immediately upon noticing symptoms of conjunctivitis. Do not use eye drops on your own, as this could worsen the condition. Always get examined by a doctor so they can prescribe the appropriate medication. Additionally, maintain good hygiene.
