The average life expectancy in India has now crossed 70 years, but are we truly living 'healthy' lives? Statistics show that the average Indian spends the last 10 years of their life battling chronic diseases (such as diabetes and high blood pressure).

A recent study published in The Lancet has revealed a surprisingly simple path to a longer and disease-free life. Let's find out how you can live a long and healthy life.
Sleep, Exercise, and Diet: The Essential Pillars
Researchers analyzed data from 59,000 people and found that sleep, physical activity, and diet, together, determine how many years you will live healthily. The good news is that you don't need to make drastic changes; small improvements can yield significant results.
20 Minutes of Walking
The study identified physical activity as the most crucial factor. People who walk briskly or remain active for at least 20-22 minutes a day showed rapid improvements in their lifespan and health. Even just 20 minutes of daily walking or exercise can provide numerous metabolic and cardiovascular health benefits.
Small Changes, Big Benefits
Often, people only change their diet or only go to the gym, but they neglect sleep deprivation. According to the study, fixing just one habit is not enough.
Sleep: 7 to 8 hours of sleep daily regulates hormones.
Diet: Including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your diet empowers the body's repair mechanisms.
Activity: Daily walks control glucose levels and blood pressure.
Surprisingly, if you increase your sleep by just 5 minutes, walk by 2 minutes, and make slight improvements to your diet simultaneously, your estimated lifespan and health could increase by a year.
9 Years of Disease-Free Life
The group with the best lifestyle (7-8 hours of sleep, more than 40 minutes of exercise, and a healthy diet) lived 9 years longer and enjoyed 9 more years of disease-free life compared to the group with the worst lifestyle. This significantly reduced the risk of major diseases such as heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and dementia.
Small Steps, Big Wins
In a country like India, where healthcare costs and pollution are rising, increasing health span is crucial. You don't need to drastically change your life; simply dedicate half an hour to your night's sleep, take a brisk walk in the evening, and increase the fiber in your diet. These small, consistent improvements will keep you independent and healthy in your old age.
