Health Tips: Pain from the waist to the feet, is this a sign of sciatica? Learn the symptoms...

Sciatica Symptoms: If you experience intense pain starting from your lower back, extending through your hips, and down the back of your leg, it may not be a sign of normal back pain, but rather sciatica. Sciatica is caused by compression or inflammation of the body's longest nerve (the sciatic nerve).

This nerve originates at the base of the spine and runs down the back of both legs, reaching the big toe. When this nerve is compressed (such as a slipped disc or bone spur), it causes excruciating pain, burning, and numbness along the entire nerve pathway.

This problem is common in people over 50 years of age or those who work in a sedentary position for long periods of time. The intensity of this pain can range from mild to unbearable, and it worsens when sitting, standing, or sometimes even sneezing. Let's explore its early symptoms.

Main Symptoms of Sciatica

The most common characteristic of this pain is its spread. The pain begins in the lower back, spreads through the buttocks, and extends down the back of one or both legs, sometimes reaching the calf or big toe. It can sometimes be quite unbearable.

Unusual Symptoms

Along with the pain, numbness, tingling, or a feeling of "pins and needles" in the affected leg are also telltale signs of sciatica. This can make it difficult for the patient to walk or put full weight on the leg.

Nature of Pain

Sciatica pain often worsens when sitting or bending forward, while lying down may provide some relief. The intense pain can make it difficult to stand for long periods of time, and sometimes it feels as if the leg has stopped working.

What to do?

If the pain persists for more than a week, or if you experience weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder control (incontinence) in the affected leg, you should consult a neurologist or spine specialist immediately. If treated promptly and appropriately, this condition can be cured.
