Health Indicators: Tongue: Our tongue is a mirror of our body's internal health. Often, people overlook the symptoms visible on the tongue. Ayurveda prescribes the detection of diseases and nutritional deficiencies by observing the tongue's color, texture, and any minor or major changes. A healthy tongue is typically a light pinkish-red color with small bumps.

However, if the tongue suddenly darkens, develops thick white spots, or shows unusual swelling, it could indicate an internal health problem. Ignoring these signs can be costly, as some persistent changes to the tongue can be early symptoms of life-threatening diseases like oral cancer. Therefore, examining your tongue daily in the mirror and recognizing changes in its color or texture is a simple and important way to detect illness and protect your health.
A very red or greasy tongue
A healthy tongue is light pink, but when it appears unusually bright red or very greasy, it may indicate a vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency often affects the formation of red blood cells. A smooth or swollen tongue can also sometimes indicate a problem with nutrient absorption in your small intestine.
Thick white patches on the tongue
Thick white patches on the tongue (resembling cottage cheese) are often a sign of oral thrush, a yeast infection caused by Candida overgrowth. This is more common in people with diabetes, weakened immune systems, or those with chronic dry mouth. Furthermore, white patches can also be a sign of leukoplakia, which can develop into cancer.
Lumps or Swollen Bumps on the Tongue
Small bumps or swollen bumps on the tongue can be caused by stress, smoking, or lack of sleep, and are generally harmless. However, if a lump or lesion persists for more than two weeks, especially on the sides or underside of the tongue, it may be a sign of the early stages of oral cancer, which should be immediately examined by a doctor or dentist.

The Importance of Hygiene and Hydration
Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial to avoiding tongue problems. Clean your tongue daily (with a tongue cleaner) and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. If symptoms persist or suddenly worsen, do not rely on home remedies; instead, consult a doctor immediately for proper treatment.
