Health: What are the effects of eating momos every day on the body? Find out why it's dangerous..

Daily Momos Side Effects: Nowadays, momos have become a daily snack in metro cities. In cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Pune, you'll find a momo stall within walking distance. From steamed momos to fried, tandoori, achari, Afghani, peri-peri… all kinds of flavors are becoming a daily part of people's diets. Office-goers, college students, and those simply looking to satisfy their evening hunger pangs often eat them daily, considering them a quick and tasty option. But as delicious as momos are, they also come with hidden health risks. According to nutritionists, eating momos daily can hurt digestion, weight, sugar, and cholesterol. Speaking to a website, Ayurvedic doctor and nutritionist Dr. Anjana Kalia explained the various changes that can occur in the body after eating momos daily and why people mistakenly consider them healthy.

Why is eating momos daily harmful?
According to Dr. Anjana Kalia, momos may seem light, but they are high in calories, refined carbs, and unhealthy fats, especially if they are made from refined flour and filled with processed fillings. She explains that refined flour takes longer to digest and is almost non-fibre-rich.
This slows digestion and increases problems like bloating, gas, and constipation. Eating momos daily also causes nutritional imbalances, as the body receives very little protein, fibre, and micronutrients. Furthermore, the red chutney sauce served with momos is high in sodium, oil, and preservatives, which is harmful for both the heart and blood pressure.

Common Side Effects of Eating Momos Daily
1. Bloating and Gas
Refined flour swells in the stomach and slows down digestion. This can lead to:
A feeling of heaviness in the stomach
Constant gas formation
Bloating
Acidity
Aggravates problems like:

2. Constipation Problem
Due to the lack of fiber in refined flour, people who eat momos daily often complain of constipation. Without fiber, the body will not be able to cleanse its stomach properly.

3. Weight Gain
Momos may seem light, but:
Rice Flour
Oil
High-calorie fillings
Sodium-rich sauces
Eating these ingredients daily can lead to calorie overload, leading to gradual weight gain.

4. Effect on the Heart
Dr. Kalia explains that most fillings in momos contain trans fat, overcooked oil, processed meat, or snack mixes. These ingredients:
Raise cholesterol
Affects blood pressure
Increase the risk of heart disease

5. Blood sugar fluctuations
Momos are high in refined carbs and low in protein. In this case:
Sugar levels rise rapidly
Then suddenly drop
This causes problems like weakness, dizziness, and fatigue.
If this happens daily, it also affects insulin sensitivity.

6. Weakening of Immunity
Eating refined flour, oily fillings, and low-nutrition foods daily deprives the body of essential vitamins and minerals. This slows down the immune system.

Is there a healthy Momo option?
Dr. Anjana Kalia says that steamed momos are slightly better than fried momos because they contain less oil. However, steamed momos containing refined flour should also not be eaten daily.

So what should be done?
Wheat momos, millet momos, or ragi momos are better options.
They contain more fiber and nutrients.
Momos made with vegetable fillings are considered healthier.
But keep in mind, eating even the healthiest momos daily is wrong because they exclude other essential food groups from your diet.

Doctor's Advice: Try Momos, But Not Every Day

Dr. Kalia says momos shouldn't become a part of your daily routine.

Eat them only 1-2 times a week.
Choose steamed over fried.
Eat less chutney
Eat soup or salad with them.
If you make momos at home and:

Make them with flour/millet.

Include vegetables and protein in the filling.

Use less oil

They will reduce their harm to the body.
