Health: Why do I get breathless after even a little walking in the winter? Could this be a sign of an underlying illness?

Shortness of breath is normal if you're doing strenuous work, walking, or running fast or for a long time. But if you become breathless even after a short walk, be cautious. In today's lifestyle, elevators have replaced stairs, and gyms have replaced parks. The need to walk is diminishing. However, it's important to remember that shortness of breath is not just a symptom of weakness, but a sign of several serious illnesses.

Shortness of breath is most common during winter. In winter, there is a lack of oxygen in the heart, lungs, or blood. The cold air in the environment causes the lungs and blood vessels to constrict, leading to dryness in the throat, breathlessness, and fatigue while walking. This indicates a weak heart, weak lungs, and thyroid imbalance. Sometimes these symptoms also point to anemia.

If you are also struggling with this problem, Ayurveda offers remedies. Consuming a decoction of basil and cloves in winter will provide relief. A decoction made with basil, ginger, and cloves taken in the morning reduces lung constriction and increases oxygen flow, allowing the lungs to function properly.

In addition, soaking fenugreek seeds overnight and consuming them with jaggery in the morning is also beneficial. This mixture strengthens the lungs, and the cold air is less likely to harm them.

Heavy, fried, and spicy food also negatively affects the diaphragm and lungs. Fried food affects the stomach and diaphragm, and the diaphragm then constricts the lungs. Therefore, one should eat sattvic (pure and wholesome) food and less spicy food. Consuming honey and ginger juice can also be helpful. This will reduce phlegm and alleviate breathing difficulties.

Regular practice of pranayama (breathing exercises) is also essential to strengthen the lungs and balance hormones. Practice Anulom Vilom, Bhramari, and deep breathing exercises every morning. This increases oxygen levels in the body, soothes the respiratory passages, and improves lung capacity. Also, try to drink lukewarm water throughout the day. This helps reduce infections in the lungs.
