All About HbA1c Test: Diabetes is spreading like an epidemic across the world. Diabetes occurs when a person's body stops producing insulin or develops insulin resistance. This causes blood sugar levels to rise, making it difficult to control. When symptoms of diabetes appear, doctors first check fasting sugar levels. If the fasting sugar level is high, an HbA1c test is performed. This test confirms diabetes. This test helps doctors determine whether a patient has diabetes, how well their sugar control is, and how they should be treated.

Dr. Anil Bansal, former president and senior physician of the Delhi Medical Association, explained that the HbA1c test measures the level of glycosylated hemoglobin in the blood. Hemoglobin is an oxygen-carrying protein in the blood and combines with glucose to form HbA1c. This test reflects the average blood sugar level over the past three months and is considered the most reliable way to manage diabetes. This test is especially important for those who already have diabetes or are experiencing symptoms. Those with a family history of diabetes should also undergo an HbA1c test periodically.
The doctor explained that a healthy person's HbA1c level is less than 5.7. A level between 5.7 and 6.4 indicates prediabetes, while a level of 6.5 or higher indicates diabetes. The higher the HbA1c level, the more serious the blood sugar problem. This test helps doctors assess a patient's blood sugar control. This allows them to adjust medications and recommend dietary and lifestyle modifications. This test also helps prevent diabetes-related damage to the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.

Health experts stated that diabetic patients should have their HbA1c test every 3 to 6 months to monitor their condition. If blood sugar control is good, this interval can be increased. Regular testing is also essential for those with prediabetes so they can take appropriate action in time. The HbA1c test is crucial for optimal diabetes care. It not only determines the severity of the disease but also helps guide patients toward appropriate treatment and lifestyle changes. Anyone with symptoms or at risk for diabetes should have their HbA1c test.
