Today's India faces many serious health challenges. Millions of people in the country now suffer from metabolic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure. This problem hasn't emerged suddenly; its roots lie in our changing lifestyles and eating habits. Earlier, the Indian lifestyle was characterized by light meals, home-cooked meals, and regular physical activity. However, today this has changed to include processed foods, junk food, a high-carb diet based on white rice and wheat, and a sedentary lifestyle. A large survey by the ICMR has further highlighted this concern. According to this study, India is grappling with not just one health problem, but a silently spreading crisis of multiple serious diseases.

Survey's Shocking Findings
Over 18,000 people were examined under the ICMR project India Diabetes. The results were extremely worrying. The study revealed that 83% of Indians have at least one serious health problem, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, or diabetes. Additionally, 41% of people were found to have prediabetes, 26% were obese, and 43% were overweight. 50% had cholesterol imbalances. This study shows that these diseases are no longer limited to cities, but have spread to rural areas as well. Women consume less tobacco or alcohol, yet obesity and physical inactivity are more common. High blood pressure and cholesterol have become common among men.
Carbohydrates have become a major challenge.
Our diets now include foods that are filling but harmful to the body. White rice, refined wheat, excess sugar, and fried foods are examples of this. People who consume a lot of carbohydrates are at increased risk of diabetes and obesity. Simply switching from white rice to whole grains doesn't provide sufficient benefits unless the total carbohydrate intake is reduced. The most important lesson from this survey is that people need to increase the amount of protein in their diets. According to studies, replacing carbs with protein reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by 9-11% and the risk of prediabetes by 6-18%. Better health can be achieved simply by increasing protein without consuming additional calories.
Which Healthy Grains and Protein Sources to Choose
According to the report, we should reduce excess carbs and bad fats in our diet. It is important to adopt a protein-rich diet and increase regular physical activity.
- Reduce the consumption of white rice and refined flour.
- Eat lentils, eggs, cheese, or other protein-rich foods at least once a day.
- Include dairy products like milk and yogurt.

- Walk, practice yoga, or engage in other physical activity for at least 30 minutes daily.
These measures will not only help control weight but also reduce the risk of diseases like high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.
