The Indian Constitution provides many important rights to women, which help them move towards equality, security, and self-reliance. On the occasion of Women's Day, here are five such rights given by the Constitution, which every woman must know.

Rights for Women in the Constitution

1. Protection from domestic violence

Under the Domestic Violence Act 2005, women get protection from physical, mental, economic, and emotional abuse. Women can get legal aid by filing a complaint with the police, women's helpline, or court.

2. Right to equal pay

Working women should get equal pay for the same work as men in the office. Under the Equal Remuneration Act 1976, women have the right to get equal pay as men for equal work. If a woman is paid less than her male colleague, she can go to the labor court for justice.

3. Right to maternity benefits

Under the Maternity Benefit Act 1961, working women have the right to get 6 months of maternity leave in case they become mothers. During this time, the company cannot make any cut in their salary and cannot even fire them from the job. This law gives women the opportunity to get security in the job and proper care of their children.

4. Right to property

According to the Hindu Succession Act 1956, both sons and daughters have equal rights on the father's property or ancestral property. Even after marriage, the woman can claim the property of her parents.

5. Right to protection from sexual harassment

Working women have been given the right under the Act to protect themselves from sexual harassment in the workplace. It is mandatory to have an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) in every company and organization, where women can lodge complaints.

Apart from this, a woman who is a victim of sexual harassment also has the right to keep her identity confidential. The victim woman can record her statement only in the presence of the District Magistrate or a female police officer.
