In today's times, installing CCTV cameras in homes, shops, and residential colonies for security purposes has become a common practice. People install cameras outside their homes to protect themselves against theft and crime. While this is entirely legal, problems arise when a neighbor's cameras begin to intrude upon your private life.

**When Does a Privacy Violation Occur?**
Speaking exclusively to NDTV regarding this matter, Advocate Deepak Thukral (Former Executive Member, Shahdara Bar Association, Karkardooma Court, Delhi) explained that if a neighbor's CCTV camera is confined solely to their own property, it is considered permissible. However, if the camera is continuously recording the interior of your home—including your balcony, windows, courtyard, or the inside of your main entrance—it may constitute a violation of your privacy (Right to Privacy).
The Advocate notes that recording someone's private life without their permission is wrongful. Under Indian law, such actions can lead to legal proceedings. Under Section 66E of the IT Act, recording someone's private images or videos without their consent is deemed a punishable offense.
**What Does the Law Say?**
The law permits individuals to install CCTV cameras for their own security; however, they are not authorized to monitor the private spaces of others. If a camera is positioned incorrectly and records activities occurring inside your home, it may be considered a serious violation. In such instances, you may first approach your neighbor and request that they change the camera's direction or remove it entirely.
**What to Do If the Issue Remains Unresolved?**
If the camera is not removed even after a conversation, you may file a written complaint at your local police station. Additionally, you have the option to file a civil suit in a civil court. Legal counsel may also be sought if deemed necessary.
Advocate Deepak Thukral emphasizes that while CCTV cameras are essential for security, they must be utilized responsibly. Intruding upon someone's private life is not only morally wrong but also a violation of the law. Therefore, if you feel that your neighbor's camera is infringing upon your privacy, you can speak up for yourself, and the law can assist you in this matter.
