Kanwar Yatra Mein Kanwar Uthane ke Niyam: As the month of Sawan approaches, an atmosphere of Shiva devotion starts to form everywhere. Along with the drums, the echo of "Har-Har Mahadev" and "Bam-Bam Bhole" starts to be heard. Lakhs of Shiva devotees take Kanwar and fill Gangajal from the holy rivers and set out to offer it to the Shivling. This journey is not only a symbol of faith but also an example of discipline, purity, and dedication. Bhopal resident astrologer and Vastu consultant Pandit Hitendra Kumar Sharma is giving more information on this subject.

Kanwar Yatra 2025 will start from July 11, and this journey will continue till Sawan Shivaratri, i.e., July 23. However, in many states, it continues for the entire month of Sawan. This tradition is believed to be thousands of years old, and it was started by Lord Parshuram. It is believed that Lord Shiva is pleased with this journey and fulfills the wishes of the devotees. But if some important rules are ignored, then the entire journey can be futile.
Every devotee should know these 10 important rules.
1. Do not make the mistake of keeping the Kanwar on the ground
The Kanwar filled with Gangajal is considered very sacred. It should never be kept on the ground. If you have to stop, then keep it on a clean wooden stand or hang it on a tree. If by mistake the Kanwar touches the ground, then it is considered impure, and new water has to be filled.
2. Be completely pure before lifting the Kanwar
Before starting this journey, it is important to clean yourself from the inside as well. Bad thoughts, anger, or feelings like jealousy should not be in you.
3. Stay away from meat and alcohol completely
Consumption of things like meat, alcohol, cigarettes, tobacco, and garlic-onion is prohibited during Sawan and especially Kanwar Yatra. It is considered against the devotion of Shiva.
4. Pay special attention to cleanliness
Bath every day and wear clean clothes. Do not touch the Kanwad without taking a bath after defecation or any unholy act.
5. Do not use leather items
Keep away from things like belts, shoes, or purses made of leather. These are considered impure and are against the spirit of the Kanwad Yatra.
6. Wear saffron clothes
Most Kanwadis wear saffron coloured clothes. It is considered a symbol of sacrifice, service, and devotion. This makes both the mind and the body engage in the devotion of Shiva.
7. Chant only the name of Shiva during the journey
Keep chanting mantras like “Har-Har Mahadev”, “Bam-Bam Bhole” during the Kanwad Yatra. This maintains energy and keeps the mind stable.
8. Following the Dak Kanwad is difficult but special
After filling the Ganga water in the Dak Kanwad, the water is poured directly on the Shivling without stopping. This is considered the most difficult but virtuous form.
9. Take full care of the environment
Do not use plastic during the journey, do not throw garbage here and there. Use reusable bottles and bags. Remember, another name of Shiva is nature.

10. Follow local rules
In states like Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, some rules of the journey are fixed, like the height of the Kanwar, the limit of DJ sound, identity card, etc. It is necessary to follow these; otherwise, there may be trouble in the journey.
So why is this journey so special?
It is said that when the sea was churned, Lord Shiva drank the poison that came out. That is why he was called 'Neelkanth'. Offering Ganga water gives peace to Shiva's throat and his blessings to the devotees. This is the reason why this journey has become not just a tradition, but a symbol of our faith and gratitude towards Lord Shiva.
