India's most beautiful archipelago, Lakshadweep, has now become more accessible than ever before. According to new regulations recently issued by the administration, tourists visiting the islands will no longer require a local sponsor or a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC). This change came into effect following a circular issued on April 29, 2026, and has significantly simplified the travel process.

Previously, planning a trip to Lakshadweep was a daunting task for many, as it required obtaining sponsorship from a local individual or agency, in addition to securing a PCC from one's home state. Both of these requirements have now been abolished. While security checks will still be conducted, this process will now be handled directly by the administration itself. If you, too, dream of spending a vacation amidst azure waters, pristine white sands, and a tranquil atmosphere, now is the perfect time to visit.
For tourists planning a trip to Lakshadweep—often hailed as India's answer to the Maldives—here is some essential travel information: how to obtain a Lakshadweep permit, the best time to visit, and an estimate of the potential travel costs.
**New Rules for Lakshadweep Permits**
The Lakshadweep administration has introduced significant changes to its tourist permit regulations. Travelers no longer require a local sponsor. Furthermore, the mandatory requirement for a Police Clearance Certificate has been removed. Now, following the submission of an application, security vetting will be conducted by the Lakshadweep Police, thereby making the entire process faster and more streamlined.
**How to Apply for a Lakshadweep Permit?**
An e-permit remains a mandatory requirement for visiting Lakshadweep. Applications are submitted via an online portal. To apply, you will need to provide the following documents:
Upload a valid ID proof, such as an Aadhaar Card or Passport.
Attach a passport-sized photograph.
Select your intended travel dates and the specific island(s) you wish to visit.
Pay the applicable permit fee and Green Tax.
Please note that applications must be submitted at least 14 days prior to your intended date of travel.
**Which Islands Can You Visit?**
Lakshadweep comprises a total of 36 islands; however, only a select few are open to tourists. You must select the specific islands you wish to visit when applying for your permit. For instance:
Agatti Island: This serves as the entry point and houses the airport, from where tourists can commence their journey.
Kavaratti: This is the administrative capital of Lakshadweep and its most developed island.
Bangaram Island: A premier tourist destination in Lakshadweep, renowned for luxury tourism. It can be reached from Agatti Island via boat or helicopter.
**Travel and Transit Regulations**
According to the new regulations, transit is permitted only through Agatti and Kavaratti, with a maximum layover duration of 12 hours. Additionally, the administration advises booking flight tickets only *after* obtaining the necessary permit.

**Cost of a Trip to Lakshadweep**
The best time to visit is between October and March. During this period, the weather is pleasant, and the temperatures remain mild. On average, the cost of a 3-to-6-day trip to Lakshadweep ranges from approximately ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 per person.
Please remember to make your travel bookings in advance. Be prepared for limited internet connectivity during your stay, and ensure you remain environmentally conscious throughout your journey.
